Does banner exchange works with the PR?

Does banner exchange will make your PR raise up, or the text links only?
I've seen many site doing the banner exchange only and their PR are really high, why is that?

I thought only the text links that raise up the PR ranking, anybody have seen or experience these things before please tell us.

Direct Links will increase the pagerank. No matter they are banner or text ones.
But the links from banner should be direct like
<a href="http://www.yoursite.com" target="_blank"><img src="banner.gif" alt="image description">

Text links are recommended than banner/image ones. Also, to reap maximum benefit from a image/banner link one should try to include keywords in image alt tag.

I think as long as the link can be followed, it should be okay.

Banner links will pass PR, so long as they are standard links (not javascript) and there is no nofollow attribute on them.
