PHILADELPHIA - An unknown number of new George Washington dollar coins were mistakenly struck without their edge inscriptions, including "In God We Trust," and made it past inspectors and into circulation, the U.S. Mint said Wednesday.

The properly struck dollar coins, bearing the likeness of George Washington, are inscribed along the edge with "In God We Trust," "E Pluribus Unum" and the year and mint mark. They went into circulation Feb. 15.

The mint struck 300 million of the coins, which are golden in color and slightly larger and thicker than a quarter.

About half were made in Philadelphia and the rest in Denver. So far the mint has only received reports of error coins coming from Philadelphia, mint spokeswoman Becky Bailey said.

Bailey said it was unknown how many coins didn't have the inscriptions. Ron Guth, president of Professional Coin Grading Service, one of the world's largest coin authentication companies, said he believes that at least 50,000 error coins were put in circulation.

"The first one sold for $600 before everyone knew how common they actually were," he said. "They're going for around $40 to $60 on eBay now, and they'll probably settle in the $50 range."

Production of the presidential dollar entails a "new, complex, high-volume manufacturing system" that the mint will adjust to eliminate any future defects, the mint said in a statement.

"We take this matter seriously. We also consider quality control a high priority. The agency is looking into the matter to determine a possible cause in the manufacturing process," the statement said.

The coin's design has already spurred e-mail conspiracy theories claiming that the religious motto was purposely omitted from the Washington dollars. That rumor may have started because the edge lettering cannot be seen in head-on photographs of the coins.

The Washington dollars are the first in a series of presidential coins slated to run until 2016. After Washington, the presidents to be honored on dollar coins this year will be John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

Bailey said the striking of the Adams coin, expected to roll out in mid-May, will proceed as planned.

"We are adjusting the manufacturing process to try to eliminate the problems," she said.

I can see a lot of those being sold for a lot due to the fact that it is "unique" and "rare" there will probably never be any of those made again. Just like the Canadian Tooney, when that fist came into circulation the center of it could easily be popped out. People would then wear the rest of the coin on a chain or necklace. I for one would love to have one just to add to a coin collection.

I guess our country doesn't trust in god anymore. He can't even keep our currency straight.

I don't really see what the big deal is. Just a mistake, and that is good for collectors.

Leave it to the media to hype it up beyond what it actually is.

I also noticed that on some of the ones that do have the phrase on them, they are on the edge of the coin, not on the coin itself...

That is normal. Also on the edge is the date and other things.
The reason this made it past inspectors is that they are not used to looking at the edges of coins while inspecting them, as this is the first coin to have such things.

the ones selling now should wait a few years, or decades maybe - and keep it in 'mint condition'. why? because they wont risk it happening again, so as it becomes an antiquity, its value will rise again to a few hundred bucks

We need to remove "In God We Trust" completely from all currency. We are slowly melding the boundaries between church and state as it is. Can't our country just be 100% non denominational? I'm starting to get sick from watching all of these wacko fundamentalist conjoin church and state!

I know that USA is a very much into this with god and stuff, and I'm not saying don't be. But really, a contry that is so mixed by religions should not have something that points into one religion. But I understand it. So even if people do thrust god why should it stay on the money? don't they know it.

But I don't want to make a fuzz about the religion. These klind of coins is rare, so they are more worth. This isn't a scandale, but a question. How come some coins, that was probably made in the same machine turned out so different?

My friend told me these coins were selling for thousands of dollars, but I'm not sure if that's true. Probably is though, with collectors and all...Anyway, I'm for keeping 'in God We Trust" on the coins. It's part of our history ,we should embrace our history and respect it. We don't have to believe it, though.

I knew there would be a response like this eventually...

Are we really? I noticed a rather opposite trend, with examples like removing official prayer time from schools, and trying to remove 'under God' from the pledge...
