I downloaded this program and set up a server, but how can my friends connect to the channel I set up? What information do they need? I really don't get it...

If it's not on a domain then they'll have to type in your IP address plus the port channel that the program users - eg: 132.142.187.295:65, where the parts before the : signifying your IP address, the part after the : signifying the port.
If you have a firewall they'll probably not be able to access. The program may allow you to setup user accounts to access it.
That's how you basically connect to something. Is it some IRC thingy btw?

The most important thing you need to do is forward the port the program uses in your router settings. That way when someone connects to your IP address from the internet it will go to the router and the router sees that request, looks in the configuration and sees that it is supposed to send the request to the box you have the server setup. Consult your router manufacturers guide on how to forward ports as it varies from router to router.
