Hi folks,
I just need a simple, plain, no-frills CMS for my website. I don't want any fancy features, just a secure login system, a provision for adding / editing content, and basic facilities for modifiying the front end. Is there one such available free somewhere?
In fact, what I want is something that I can take apart and put together again, so that I understand the nuances, then I can move on to the big ones like Joomla and opencommerce.
PS : I'm thinking of something even smaller / simpler than Wordpress

SiteFrame(weighing in at half the size of most popular CMSes) is pretty much no-frills(you will need to use 3.2 or 4 + Smarty, which I made a post in the PHP and MySQL section about how to install Smarty if you want to use 4. 5 is unavailable on FriHost because it uses PHP 5), and it has about the same amount of features as Joomla. However, Coranto is even more bare bones(weighing in at just about 500k) and easier to use, but it doesn't do as much as SiteFrame without some modding.
I was thinking of making a simple web page manager that would qualify for exactly what you want, but I want to finish the bigger one first.
Have you ever tried PHPFusion? Very small footprint, easy to use, and an Access Control List-like user accounting. Really great!!

try sourceforge.net
it may have what you are looking for, i found some on there but got a tad confused by some but its just me!
In the past I have used both Mambo/Joomla as well as Xoops. I must say that between the 2, Mambo/Joomla was somewhat easier to learn how to operate than was Xoops, although Xoops did have a few different functions that did Mambo/Joomla, but you said you wanted something simple, I say go with Mambo/Joomla.

and wordpress are the most advised if u want to move to larger ones . try them both .
CMSimple is also advised pal .
i would consider u directly keep your hand in coding rather than learning from the base .
I'd say CuteNews & Textpattern though you may find some other interesting stuff over at HotScripts or you can just read some tutorials and make your own little cms.
Just browse all of them at opensource cms and find one you like.

How true. LOL I guess I just let my own opinions get the best of me. I am not much for alot of the software mentioned here. I prefer to have something with decent add ons available.
Damn simple , is wordpress .
Consider older secure stable functions .
They would be even simpler .
I agree with charisco Mambo/Joomla it's easy CMS for creating site but I like Drupal
it's free and http://ibm.com too use this cms for his site.
You know, if we are really talking about "simplecity" with CMS we must all take them (the aim of CMS is simplicity of use and content management). And it depends on your sight of this simplicity, for Joomla (awarded best 2006 CMS) it might be simple of use with his huge capactity of extention ..
Don't you see ?
Maybe you should try e107. I use it for my website and it's really not so hard to understand it. I took me few hours to study it up completely. There is also pretty good support with themes and plugins.
I like PHP Fusion, the way it is set up is phenomenal compared to alot of the other 'simpler' CM Systems.

Has anyone tried to set up Drupal at Frihost? That is what I'm attempting to do at this time at my site here at Frihost.
If anyone has setup drupal on there site, I'd like to check it out, so send links to the forum at my site.
Anyway, for more information, check out www.drupal.org

That looks like a more expensive CMS to me - the CMS is written in JSP, not PHP like Joomla.
Joomla and Wordpress here. Wordpress is what I prefer the most.
Textpattern installation is smaller than 500K.... ad totally no frills (though you can have it to be very frilly as well!!)
I'd recommend a few CMS like Wordpress and Textpattern mainly for blogs, but not limited to content sites as well, and FanUpdate for integrated news into your website. I really don't recommend Cutenews because of it's security issues.
