Is Paintball a Sport?
Alright is paintball officially considered a 'sport', or is it a 'game'?
Should it be a 'sport' or a 'game'?
Should it be a 'sport' or a 'game'?
It should be a sport as they have the World Paintball Championships on ESPN 2 which is a sports channel. So yes i think it's a sport.

I thought that ESPN covers basically ever sport that might be a sport or is like a sport.

Bad criteria in identifying something as a sport. ESPN is the Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. They had stuff like jump rope and spelling bee on ESPN. They even have Scrabble and Dominos at times.
And yes, paintball can be considered a sport.

But in that case isn't anything requiring physical strength/speed technically a sport? If I were to start competitively launching anvils around, I suppose it would be a sport, but not a great enough one to be televised . . . except by ESPN.
Yeeeah, way not...

I'm so imagining Highlanders right now. They love to toss around heavy objects. :D
I'd put paintball down as just a hobby, not a sport. It is all pretty subjective in the end.

Well in scotland Caber (sp?) Tossing is considered a sport, which wouldnt be all that different to Throwing Anvils...
yes
I think it is a kind of play.
I think Paintball is definitly a sport!
1. You need alot of stamina to keep running, ducking, ect.
2. You need to have good aim.
3. You need to be able to be hit with a Paintball going 200fps without crying.
4. You need to have stratagy.
5. You need to have guts!
Thus, Paintball should be considered one of the best "SPORTS" ever made!

Heck yeah it's a sport...
Get to shoot all the guys! hahahaha
Yeah I would say it is a sport, just like golf or tennis. It requires a lot of physical action, and it requires strategy as well. How would you define the word "sport", anyway?
On wikipedia it is defined as:
SDo i think it would fit in there very well, as all requirements are covered.

Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Used by itself, sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors.

Of course.... is more than a sport!! is action!!!! come on!!! reality!!!
Yes, I think its a sport, it is really fast growing and is recognized all over the world.
I've even never heard of that kind of sports, to be frankly, what's it?
What do you mean by a sport, if Pingpong is not?
In my opinion, Pingpong is similar to Badminton and tennis in some extent, so it is also called table tennis. One needs good energy to finish a match with all his/her concertration focused in some one hour or even longer.
It is a game composed of both intelligence, energy and skills.
Every sport event includes these three factors, the only difference is the balance or the composition of each factor to others.
If it is in Pingpong, I would give 3:3:4

I think that this is a sport cus (i think) paintball have world championships.
I consider it both. It is a sport if you are playing a team on team. Its a game if you are playing more like one on one with friends.
It is most definitely a sport. It requires a lot of physical and mental ability. Also, there is a set way to obtain the win. Just like baseball where every time u cross the plate it's a point, in basketball where you get points for shooting into the basket. Unlike competitive cheerleading and monster trucks where it is based on peoples' opinions, there is a set way of getting points.
I've changed my opinion on the Propper Noun which is "Paintball"!
Listen, Blaster! The Propper Noun which is "Paintball" is not a sport or a game
! The Propper Noun which is "Paintball" is LIFE
!!!
So, in light of that statement, I have made a set of rules, that should be followed, when talking about the Propper Noun which is "Paintball", here on the forums and elsewhere!
Rule:
1. "ALWAYS" spell the Propper Noun which is "Paintball" with a capital "P", and give the Propper Noun which is "Paintball" the respect of the the Propper Noun which is "Paintball" is, and that the Propper Noun which is "Paintball" deserves!
2. When talking about the subject of 'the Propper Noun which is "Paintball"', "ALWAYS" reffer to the Propper Noun which is "Paintball" as the Propper Noun which is "Paintball", and never use a pronoun (like "it") to reffer to the Propper Noun which is "Paintball"!
3. "NEVER" misspell the Propper Noun which is "Paintball"!
And those are the first three rules of the "LIFE" of, the Propper Noun which is "Paintball", Fanatic
!
Follow them, abide by them, and "LIVE" by them!
Now, think again, Blaster, before you ever go and "Blaster" the Propper Noun which is "Paintball", again
!!!
P.S. "If you have anymore suggestions of potential rules, please P.M. them to me
!"
Thanks!

yes, i would consider it more a sport than car racing.
Hunting is a sport.
Paintball is harmless people hunting. So I'd say it's a sport.

If there had been a poll on this post I think it would have been 100% that everybody thinks Paintball is a sport.
In addition to the fact that having ESPN televise it makes it a sport, it is also a sport that has sponsors. When you have a bunch of guys running around wearing jerseys from large corporations that not only pay for all of the players gear, but pay them to play – I think that qualifies very much as making you a professional athlete in a nationally recognized sport (i.e. – Paintball.

I think it is a sport too, because there is a competitive element in it.
Right! So far every person who has posted in this topic has agreed that Paintball is indeed a sport.
SO......here is an official poll for everybody.
<deleted link. a moderator has added a poll to this topic for us.>

Yup - definately a sport.
That is a very good question. I guess it all depends on how you really look at it. I mean if you just get a bunch of friends together and go to the local paintball field or arena it would be a game, but if you are on a team and play many events it would be classed as a sport. Same as well any "sport" per say. Take a look at billiards for example. It too is also shown on ESPN, TSN and The Score "for us canadians" when you go to the bar and shoot some pool it is a game, but in a tournament it is classed as a sport. Again it all depends on how you really look at it.
Quote:
Sport is a physical activity involving large muscle groups, requiring strategic methods, physical training and mental preparation and whose outcome is determined, within a rules framework, by skill, not chance. Sport occurs in an organized, structured and competitive environment where a winner is declared.
From the definition itself, I say Paintball is a sport.
It's about as much of a sport as ballroom dancing
It's a game, not a sport. Sports tend to require athletic ability. Paintball does not. Anyone can jog, crawl, and sneak around. What's next? Claiming playing video games is a sport? Piss on that.

Correct, which means it can be categorized as any other major sport. After all, you can play basketball, football, or soccer at home or with friends in a fun, non-competitive way too. I think what makes something an absolute sport is when the really good players get paid to play it.
I think it depends... I believe that paintball is a sport, because sports mean competition and paintball is all about competition. Sports also means having fun and you can't find anything more fun than paintball!
It s a sport I guess..
If they call playing a game an electronic sports
then paintball definetely gotta be a sport
Given the large volume of competitions, the sponsored players, the prize money, and the fact that you can now see regularly scheduled paintball on ESPN, I don’t know how this can be considered anything but a sport
yeah...I think it is a sport...
and it is really fun to play
and it is really fun to play
no

No offense, but the word “no” hardly constitutes a valid argument for or against anything. I have argued that the things that define a typical sport (such as corporate sponsors, broadcasts on ESPN, well paid players, etc.) are present in paintball. In fact, anytime you are getting paid to play a game it can be considered professional.
In fact, anything that you as a person can do for a living and get paid for is called a “profession”. So by the very definition of the word ‘profession’ paintball players who make a living playing for teams make it a professional sport.

Hunting cannot be considered a sport. There is no physical activity involved. You sit, wait for your animal of choice to come along and shoot. It's a hobby at best.
Same goes for fishing, all kinds of fishing cannot be considered a sport. The fact they have shows dedicated to it on ESPN is beyond me. I give credit to those that do deep sea fishing as that takes some balls if not just twisted minds to try and catch marlins and the like. But to have competitive bass fishing??? What is going on?!
But back to the question at hand, paintball is most definately a sport. So much strategy involved with how you are going to make your move to capture the flag. Utilizing the areas on the field to your best possible advantage. Without proper teamwork your team will lose. It's a shame there isn't a lot more of it on TV or at least at better times.
I'd call it a sport. It's more of a sport than computer/console games, which someone wrongly believe (IMHO) is a sport.
You actually need to move around, keep your wits about you to stop being shot, run like all hell...I'd call that a sport.
Whether or not any TV or cable station/network airs it or if it attracts professionals and money doesn't come into it too much for me.

Yes. It most certainly is.
i think it is a sport but anyway i just want say i like it a lot...when you are in the field i have no words to discribe....
Of course its sport, same as poker, chess and other "table" games. There are so many strange types of sport and you cant even count them.
