[Norsk/Latin/Eng] Searching for dictionaries/translators

Helios
I've been looking for Norwegian to English (and vice versa) translators/dict.s
Also Latin to English (and vice versa).
If you know any good trans. or dict.s online, please provide a link Smile
I also would like to know more about the grammar of the two languages.

There are some quite decent Latin dictionaries if you search for the term Latin Dictionary on google(the first one is the best IF you know your roots and stems to translate). Latin is really difficult to translate without knowing the language - there are seven declensions(versus the three in english) of nouns that determine where an object is in the sentence. To complicate matters, not only do some of the declensions share the same ending, but Latin also has a very loose word order. This makes the language almost completely impossible to translate well through a computer.

http://www.textkit.com/ has a few good PDFs of books to teach you Classical Latin if you want to. It's a nice language, but as you can see from above it is not the best language for those who want to cop out and learn something easy(old english might be nicer to you, but its harder to find good free learning tools online).

Well, the translation isn't quite [grammatically] correct, but it may help out. This site translates a bit of a variety of languages. Hopefully it'll help.

Does anyone know good Chinese translation sites? It doesn't need to translate sentences for me to be happy. I currently use chinese-tools.com. The websites been down a lot lately though. I've also tried zhongwen.com but find it annoying and hard to use.

The one [dictionary] I often use is http://dict.cn

For translation, you probably want to try either http://babelfish.altavista.com/

or http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en

which are the best among all in my opinion...

I used to use http://www.mdbg.net/ as well.

Thanks a ton prole. I really like the dict.cn site so far. I'll have to check it out more when I have to do my homework this weekend.

I didn't mean to "kidnap" your thread. I actually posted my own thread and then saw that my question fit perfectly under the title of this thread, so fearing getting told to move it I just posted in here and got rid of mine. You guys have me playing mind games now. I think I'll just do whatever and hope it's for the best from now on.

try wordreference.com, it has a lot of languages. Babel also supports Norwegian. (at least it used to)

I doubt there ever will be a software that can translate Latin to English without mistakes.
There are grammatical constructions that you can't translate 1 to 1. You have to translate 'freely'.
e.g.:
Caesar est domi -> word by word translation would be "Caesar is a house", which makes no sense. Instead, it means "Caesar has a house".
Also, there are much more grammatical cases in the Latin language. Latin to German is already pretty hard, but the German language is more similar to the Latin than the English language is.

I used to have to do Latin > English translations all the time and have found no better online dictionary than the 'Perseus Project' one, which is provided courtesy of Tufts University:

http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/resolveform?lang=Latin

It gives you all the different forms of the word and if you're unsure what the original form is then it will still figure it out for you.
