I HATE CINEMAS

hunterm
I mean, come on, doesn't everyone?

You have to get there early so that your not wedged in the corner of the cinema because of all the other g!ts who got there before you.

If you're lucky enough to get a decent seat your enjoyment is ruined by some kn0b texting through the entire film (no doubt the plot to his mates outside the cinema), so you spend the entire movie trying not to notice the glow from his phone.

Then there's the constant nattering, and the people who laugh insanely at inappropriate moments. The constant rustling of crisp packets, the scooping of popcorn and slurping of drinks.... "No, it's empty STOP SUCKING WILL YOU!!!"

And there's the price for all this fun. It's extortionate. Don't get me wrong, there's no better way to enjoy a movie than on the big screen with a good blast of THX sound, but there's a lot to be said for the comfort of your own front room.

Maybe, the solution is to install a home cinema in my spare room....
Captain Fertile
Oh thanks for posting that you old meanie!!! Laughing

It really made me laugh, it was very well written and I agree with every word you said. Especially the laughter and the sucking on empty cups - SO TRUE!

Then there is the having to twist your feet to a 90 degree angle or even having to stand because you are sat next to some group of strangers with one small bladder between the entire group. One needs to go every 5 minutes then they all have to troop out.

There is also the darling child who kicks the back of your seat all the way trhough the movie and insists telling his friend what happens next because he hes seen the movie before.

Yes, the prices are a real rip-off too, especially when you are treated like cattle and attended by a crew or bored teenagers who think manual labour is the name of a Spanish guy!

These are all generalisation but all things that have happened to me too.

So yeah, Bah Humbug!
greatfire
The movies that i go to aren't really that bad, mind you it's probably because i only go to movies when they are about to finish showing so its basically me and my mates in the cinema. Sometimes there is a few other people but, hey 10 peolple in a cinema
Blu_Spykz
Hah. Yeah, I fully agree. It isn't the cinema that's bad though - it's the occasionally arogant, ignorant F***ers that go.

Popcorn throwing, raucious laughter when the main character so much as raises an eyebrow, phones, talking, and, if you're unlucky, backrow teens making out **slurp slurp**.

Man, I guess i am pretty lucky. We live within walking distance of a new (well, 5 years old now) cinema and we don't have any of those issues. We usually go to an early show (4:30 to 5) on Wednesday and most of the time we are either the only ones there. Maybe one or two other well behaved couples. And that is true during the first week's run. Since it is pretty new, it has stadium seating, comfy chairs and good leg room (I'm 6'2")

But, oh, I do see red when I go at other times and have to deal with all the morons out there. I have actually taken a cell phone from a kid and given it to the manager for "safe keeping". I probably wouldn't do that again, but the look on his face was priceless. Laughing
Insanity
I think the movie theaters are alright. I mean, everywhere you go, you're bound to meet idiots and inconsiderate morons like that. You just have to deal with it and ignore it and enjoy a big picture on a humungus screen.

Oh yeah, and as for prices, it's actually not that bad if you're thrifty and go during matinees, or when you have coupons or something. Razz

You have a cinema nearby where you can go and watch movie, nad what should I say??? In my city there isn't any cinema at all..
You have no idea how much I want to watch a movie at cinema, and I
don't have any option at all...

I think you should be grateful with what you have...
rightclickscott
I have a movie theater in a my city which I go to quite often. However, I don't go when everyone else is. I usually go when a movie has been out for a while, and at the earliest showing, which is usually around 2 pm. That way, it ensures that there won't be too many people there, like, in the single digits. Plus, I'm usually the first guy in there, so it's a whole lot easier to gauge how many people will be there. Hell, I've had whole theaters to myself. It's freaking amazing, especailly during crappy movies, since I can just jump around the seats or slide down the banister instead of watching the movie. I invite my friends to go at the earliest showings, but they usually don't come. Probably because I never invite too many people.
Pyro Man
Ive noticed, generally cinemas in Britain arw usually half full, nobody goes anymore. I do like the cinema though its a good experience
neosree
If you remember the first Scary Movie, there is a girl getting killed in a theater. The fun part is it is not the killer who kill her, it is the audiance, just because of her annoyances, they really picturise some kind of people's behaviour in cinemas. I also hate it. Some even attend the phone, and talk without respecting the viewers nearby. This is a reason I also hate cinemas , one day an id*ot put his feet on my chair when I came back after going toilet on intervel time. How can I sit in that chair again? This kind of id*ots spoil the whole movie. It is better to watch a movie in my Home Theater, way too better.

Movie and TV shows - this is a real poison for brain in 21 century.
I can suggest for everybody to read more interesting books. You can exchange your Plasma TV for god books collections, this is true Smile
Alex Is Mental
Usually I find cinemas O.K, mainly because I go when all the hype has gone. I only time I hated was when a little kid kept kicking the back of my chair for ages - that annoyed me.

oh man, i guess i SHUD be thankful for what i have in my hometown!! wow! now i know how serious the problem is in the states! haha. but seriously, i would much prefer to have empty theatres than full ones!! normally the more packed the theatre is, the more the noise there is!! i do not understand sometimes WHY the adults bring their kids who WOULD CRY in the middle of the show!! dont they have the common sense to KNOW such things??? Geex!! or they are worried the kids would not have the chance to seat in theatres when they are grown up?? PARENTS!! Give us a BREAK, i'd say!!!!! i guess it all boils down to manners and ethics - and also the way kids are brought up... sigh, i feel kinda sad for them now.. DAMN!!
budazz
well that is your point......for me...... i love watching on a big screen....i love to enjoy film ........with a great sounds.......eating popcorn..etc. etc. i dont go to the cinema...often......so i spend sometimes watching my favorite film on a big screen Razz
cavey
The Cinema-manners are pretty good here I live. Therefore I love going to the movies! The prices though are very high, and two tickets costs about the same as the DVD.

Perhaps the more you look/listen for annoying habits, the more you hear/see it.
desertwind
I love Movies.

But I do have a friend who've never watched a movie (event in mini screens) in his entire life (30 years). He do not hate it, but seems never go for it too.
ItsWesley
I agree that whenever I go to the cinema there always is some moron who ruins it for you, with their terribly bad manners. Its the main reason why I don't go to the cinema much, along with the prices. The only reason I go to the cinema is to see new films, as it takes around 4-6 months or so for them to come out on DVD, and its much better viewing the DVD at home than being in the cinema.
onemoment
the whole cinematic experience itself is great and cannot be replaced unless you have your own private cinema screen with surround sound comfy chairs etc etc in your bedroom. THOUGH i totally agree about the annoying stuff people do in there. so true.

my verdict is: cinemas are great, its just the people who suck
Tom7
WOW, i've never really thought of it that way, i always just put up with it and think its all part of the experience. But, yes, you're right.
HoChiMo
hahaha, the first poster is soo right.
mattchun
Are you O.K?

If there are no cinemas, there are no movies!

You just do not understand what they mean to who love it.
mina
I do have to agree with most everyone, going to the theaters can be irritating, especially when it comes to the loud inappropriate laughter... when there's a lamp post on the screen. I don't go very often myself, mainly due to the price, but when I do go there always seems to be at least one irritation... usually it's someone really tall sitting in the seat right in front of me, even when the majority of the seats are open. grr...
bigdan
I've never had that problem when I've gone to the movies. And I prefer going to the movies, it gets me out of the house. Very Happy

its an experience.. its something to do for fun, something diffrent.. ppl always complainin...
Afaceinthematrix
I don't like them because they are expensive... It's like $8.50 to watch a stupid movie... I wait until they come out and I can usually rent them or borrow them for free... sometimes they'll even come on tv. I watch movies all the time on tv...
Simulator
I don't personally go to the cinema for the movie, if i want to really enjoy a movie i stay at home. I go to the cinema for the cinematic experience!!

There are one or two cinemas i boycott just because they are so awful there isnt even a cinematic experience but there are also some that are so amazing you dont even have to see a movie to ejoy them!! The ones that have entire floors dedicated to sweets!! and the biggest most fluffiest chairs you could ever dream of!!

Movie enjoyment is for a dark room with a nice couch, the light off and silence.

Cinema enjoyment is for at the cinema.

Thats my opinion.

Over and out.
scottycrip
I think it all depends on what movie and when you go. If you want a peaceful experience, go when the movie has been out for a few weeks and make it a Tuesday or Wednesday night. But if you go see a movie just released on a Friday and it's rated PG-13, you're going to run into a lot of annoyances. And the people that are annoying aren't the type of people to get annoyed at the theater so, in turn, annoy the hell out of everyone else. I love going to the theater but I understand why some people hate it.

If you get annoyed easily, I'd recommend watching a drama on Tuesday night when there are only people like you there (if there's anyone else there at all)
Osmodius
Honestly, I'd rather watch a film in low resolution on my small monitor than in an environment like that. The only time I can justify paying to watch a movie at a cinema is when the theater is virtually empty, like it was on the first night of Snakes on a Plane.

Once some stupid kids were playing with their phones in the row behind me, eventually a manager-guy came in and confronted them, they were all, "we don't have phones" and shitting their pre-teen pants. Priceless.
Dean_The_Great
I agree, that in the environment you described, watching a movie would pretty much suck. Although if you choose to go see a movie a.) after it has been playing for awhile, and/or b.) during a non-peak time (such as a matinee), then you'll probably have a much better cinematic experience. That way you can be concentrating on the massive screeen and THX sound in dolby surround.

Or, of course, you could make a room into a wicked home theatre... but it may take awhile for that to be the most cost-effective in the long run.
Rako
what you are saying would suck. but where i live the movies aren't that bad there are usually plenty of seats and everyones nice and quite.

or maybe I'm just the problem?
GSIS
The one that annoys me the most is when you're near someone who has already seen the movie five times and insists on telling her friends (and everyone else nearby) what's going to happen next all the way through it. Evil or Very Mad

The price of Pick-and-Mix makes me angry too! Laughing
LimpFish
I love one Movie Theatre, the dollar theatre in Honolulu, Hawaii! Smile all movies for a dollar! (50c during the day!)
TurtleShell
There used to be dollar theaters all over the place. Even just...six or seven years ago, there was a dollar theater in Cedar Rapids I went to all the time on the weekends. It was a great way to blow a Saturday night, when there was nothing else to do. We used to just pick a movie we'd never heard of and figure even if the movie was total garbage, a dollar wasn't much to spend on two hours of entertainment.

The price of movies these days is disturbing, especially given that they force you to sit through 15 minutes of commercials before the movie even begins. When I was a kid I went to movie theaters all the time, but now I might go to the movie theaters twice a year, and that's pushing it. Why would I? You're absolutely right about the obnoxious people in the theaters (I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone complaining about the inconsiderate bastards who sit there writing text messages...having a bright little screen light up next to you every fifteen minutes is SO distrating), and you have to spend an arm and a leg. Even if you can find a place that has matinee prices, it's still way too expensive, given that I can buy the movie on DVD for the same price it would cost me and a friend to see it on the big screen. DVDs don't even take very long to get released these days. When I was a kid you had to wait FOREVER for the movies to come out on video after they hit the theaters. Now it seems to happen in what...two months maybe?

The saddest part is that I used to LOVE going to see things at the cinemas. As a girl, when I saw Jurassic Park for the first time, I literally screamed the first time I saw that raptor nearly bite the leg off that kid who fell through the ceiling. I mean, I was that into the experience. Seeing a really great film on that giant screen was like magic. Now I can't help feeling like a chump for paying money for something that pisses me off that much.
filet
so far cinemas that i went to..are enjoyable place...nice audience..well mannered .. i guess one thing would be suck if the seating is way in front..you would get stiff neck!!!! but that wont be a problem if you book earl for the tickets !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really believe that the Movie Cinemas are for public viewing. I go with friends and watch movies for the social aspect of it, not for the actual movie itself. There's no point for me going to a Theatre by myself, unless it's a good Play or Theatrical Performance. I thought that's how everyone felt ...

I think many of us go there for the huge screen and sound system. Being in a large group of people is just something that the situation forces on you.

So you go for the social aspect? Does that mean that you don't mind any of the things that have been mentioned here (talking, phones, etc)? Just curious.

I find that if I go in the late morning on Saturday, there are hardly any people there. But when I saw POTC3 It was extremely crowded. But, your post did make me laugh! Smile
