Seems to be the same... Cause Canon Rock is an adaptation of Canon in C from Pachelbel.
Are they ?
rongsen
yeah man canon rock is an adaptation...btw its canon in D.Jerryc's canon rock is simply awesome......and joe satriani's is a cool classical.....u gotta hear it if u havn't!
saeleyjnr
Taking a look away from the usual suspects like satriani, eddie van halen, slash etc.

My alternative candidate would be "digital love" by daft punk. An unexpectedly brilliant guitar solo in the middle of an electro/dance song.
rongsen
heya dude...i havnt listened to daft punk but i heard from a pal saying daft punk is good..... will have to try it out
mattchun
my favorite guitar solo is the HOTEL CALAFONIA,What you guys think about it?
qscomputing
Definately got to be Canon Rock.
Dr Carruthers
Probably the one in Everybody Knows That You're Insane by Queens of the Stone Age.
rongsen
Hotel California aint that bad either.....
spaz-o
Hotel California's nice, but highly overrated.

I really love Haste the Day's version of Oh Come Emmanuel. It's really beautifully done.

And Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria is a good one. And Sweet Home Alabama by Lynard Skynard has its moments.

But, being a sucker for the poppy music, I'm gonna have to say Nine Days - Absolutely. I know it's not technically amazing, but songs don't have to be riddled with all the fanciness and revolutionary-ness of Hendrix to be good.

Little wing, by Jimi Hendrix

The solo from Panic Attack by Dream Theater

Here's the solo ( nothing else other than the solo ) http://extremefilmsproductions.com/playthis.mp3

Children of Bodom - Everytime I Die
Ensiferum - Lai Lai Hei
Nevermore - The River Dragon Has Come
Nevermore - Engines of Hate
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor
Helloween - My Life for One More Day

Some from the top of my head... I can't pick one hehe.
orizak
I'm not going to bother mentioning all the obvious ones (Van Halen, Hendrix, Satrini, etc.) so I'm going to say some of my favorite lesser known solos.

A couple A7X solos are really good, like Bat Country's, Beast and the Harlot's, and Sieze the Day's.

I really like Kurt Cobain's Teen Spirit solo; it just sounds really good even though it's not very technical.

Lots more but I'm not going to bother posting them all Razz
Captain Fertile
Its not a solo in a record as such but it is Stevie Vie solo/duet (with himself as it happens because he played both parts for the recording of the movie) from the movie Crossroads starring Ralph 'Karate Kid' Machio.

The first time I saw it I was blown away.

Also like Canon rock as well as the solos from:

Beat it - Michael Jackson/Eddie Van HAlen

Jump - Van Halen

And just about all of them from Iron Maiden.

And Billy Idol - Solos from the superb Steve Stevens (who also played the mind blowing electric guitar solos on the Top Gun movie).

The three from All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. The more I look at the tabs, the more I realize how I'll never come close to Jimi's level of pure awesome.

3. November Rain - Slash

4. Bohemian Rhapsody - Brian May

5. Hotel California - Don Felder/Joe Walsh

I think it is difficult to tell which guitar solo is your favorite. Theres a lot of great guitar solos out there and none of us have heard even half of them. However - there is indeed mentioned some really good solos in thread.

Long time ago I saw a huge list with the best guitar solos of the history, but I didn't agree too much...

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

Agree! The guitar solo in "November Rain" is the best!
PhilSS
The best guitar solos ever are from a variety of sources....

1-Zack Wylde with Ozzy doing "No More Tears"
2-Randy Rhoads with Ozzy doing "Crazy Train"
3-Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
3-Stryper - Reach Out
4-Janet Jackson - Black Cat
5-Kevin Lyons with DAWN doing "Sweet Chariot"
6-Rush - Spirit Of The Radio
7-Def Leppard - Bringing On The Heartbreak with Phil Collen 2nd version
8-Queen-Hammer To Fall
9-Alter Bridge - Open You Eyes Mark Tremonti
10-Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien
froginabox
I'm going to agree with PhilSS and say Satriani's Surfing with the Alien, but I'm adding Flying in a Blue Dream to that list!

Dream Theater - Beyond This Life (live in Budokan version)
Gotta admit, that's one of my favourites too. Listen to "Lost Without You" by John Petrucci (in his solo album) - one of my favourites. Any of Steve Vai's work, especially Whispering a Prayer, or Joe Satriani's work... or John Petrucci, Leslie West, Eric Clapton... gah, list goes way on.

This is really hard to choose. Maybe 'Sweet Child of Mine' by Slash but there's a lot of contenders.
RallyMonkey
Get Loose - Belle & Sebastian
hsadmin
I know it's not a hard one.. but the whole song of Reject Yourself by Killswitch Engage.

Also.. I dont see why this one wasn't posted - Walk by Pantera..

Honestly.. The best.. And probably the longest.. I think is Stream Of Consciousness.. BY dream theater.

I totally agree with Cliffs of Dover, awesome song. As for Rush, I think a lot of their songs (if not all of them) have very good solos, for one instrument or another. Razz
Another band with good solos would be Boston. "Long Time", "Hitch a Ride", and "Don't Look Back" to name some songs with the best solos. (In my opinion)
spaz-o
I think a lot of those are overrated, but I don't really care for metal or old school rock.

I prefer jazzy, full-of-tone solos that just seem to flow or dance.
Tuxy
Zakk Wylde (BLS) - In this river (live show)
qebab
I'm a bit amazed that no one has mentioned Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. The outro is simply put fantastic - not because it is "perfect" or technically difficult, or quick, simply because of the sheer strength of it. There is so much emotion in it... It is definitely my favorite guitar solo of all time.

Youtube has a 9 minute live version of the song, from the Pulse DVD, with an extended guitar solo of nearly 5 minutes. Well worth a watch.

Oh, and Coming Back to Life by the same band is pretty awesome too.

Other favorites include:
All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix,
Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits,
November Rain by Guns 'n Roses,
nearly everything made by the Allman Brothers Band.

Open your Eyes - Alter Bridge

I just love this solo. Its amazing. What is it that people have against this band that they are going to let go of such an awesome piece of music.
deadskinmask
I have to say:

Neil Zaza - Purple Rain
Led Zeppelin - Since I've been loving you (live)
pll
Through the fire and flames > Dragonforce (power metal)
Over the hills and far away > Nightwish

Anyone agree with me ?
Cedar Speeder
I've always been a fan of Kirk hammet of metallica so i guess my favourite will be "outlaw torn" from the load album.
Kanoga
I'd say to say Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. One day I hope to be able to play that. Razz
OH and I love Johnny B. Goode by chuck berry too!
Insanity
^That is an awesome 5 minute long solo.
agustin
I think Angu Youngs solos are the best!!! he has skills!! one of the best guitarrist ever!!! the power of the rock in only one dude that could change the rock and roll forever!!

Oh, oh, oh yeaaahhhh!

Damn, that's a fine piece of music. They don't make em like that anymore. Just like microwaves and kettles - I bought a kettle and it broke two months later. Back before I was born kettles were meant to last.

What a rip.
sondosia
I like the one in Stairway to Heaven by, obviously, Led Zeppelin.

Also, the guitar solo in the movie Freaky Friday has always captivated me for some reason. Very Happy
darth_revan
hmm... Great guitar master Jason Becker's masterpiece: Mabel's Fatal Fable.
Macko112
Listen to the guitar solo in Fury of the Storm by Dragonforce, it will melt your face.

Freebird is awesome too, but I prefer the insane electric guitar shredding.
roguehider
Iron Savior - Electric Eye
Iron Maiden - Fear of The Dark
Helloween - Mr.Torture(I Love All Helloweens)
....
willy101
Hmm I really enjoy the one from My Sharona

i guess the whole song is a solo but Slash's Godfather Theme
Jaan
The Police - So Lonely

Van Halen - Eruption

Those are the only ones that come to mind. Good stuff though.
bigbadjohn
Id go with any song by Stevie Salas the worlds greatest and underrated guitarist. This guy has got some serious chops.

He is like a Jimi Hendrix version for the 21st century he takes all manner of influences and blends it into his own type of music.
