An automated signup system is fast and easy and that's part of the reason we don't employ one here at FRIHost.
Manual processing of hosting applications, though tedious, gives us more control over the kind of sites that we host.
This is one thing that is not "likely" to change anytime soon.

True, it would look bad for your image to host something like a porn site.
