BEIJING - A desperate Chinese university student wants to "rent" a girlfriend for 10 days so he can show her off to his parents over the Lunar New Year holiday, state media reported Wednesday.

The physics student, who gave his name as Zhu Lijie, posted a notice on a bulletin board at Peking University offering 1,000 yuan ($130) to a woman who would pose as his girlfriend for the trip home for the holiday, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The advertisement said the woman should be "an honest, kind and similar-aged girl with a diploma."

The Lunar New Year holiday, which starts Feb. 18 this year, is the most important family holiday in China.

Xinhua said Zhu had told his parents, who were pressuring him to get a girlfriend, that he had been studying too hard and had no time to meet a potential partner.

Peking University officials and the police have warned women to be wary of such advertisements.

Wang Jisheng, a professor with the Psychology Institution of the Chinese Academy Sciences, was quoted as saying Zhu was trying to show filial piety to his parents but was only cheating them.

In my opinion this is completely wrong. I mean sure this is a big event in china but still... itsn't that ilegal? isn't that almost like prostitution? I know here in Canada and most likely in the USA it would be considdered ilegal.

Also why does he have to rent one? it is pretty bad that he has to do this? No girls like him? why didn't he just ask someone out who goes to school with him? I mean I am no prize myself but atleast I have the courage to ask someone out.

So in other words this is totaly pathetic

I don't think it's "wrong" I suppose, and it's probably a much more common occurance than most would think.

Isn't prostitution a term that defines sexual intercourse for monetary gain.

This is more of an escort service. Different.

Of course, in that case, some dating relationships could be defined as prostitution. A guy pays for dinner, and the girl has sexual intercourse. And if she doesn't like the dinner, or movie or whatever, no sex.

But yes, nowhere did the boy say that the girl would be required to have sexual intercourse with himself. Maybe a kiss or two, but that isn't such a big issue. I see no problems if people did this kind of thing, but I personally think it is dumb.

Quite interesting matter. It's one kind of escort service. But, it not a good idea to make confuse parents about gf. I won't support it anyway.

I don't see what the big deal is. I mean, so he doesn't have a Girlfriend. Is that so bad? Maybe it is better he be honest about it to his parents. Now he'll be the butt of so many jokes. And a notice on the board!! Does he really think that with that kind of publicity his parents won't hear of his stunt anyway? I think they will be even more sad at that news. And he will just feel all the more pathetic.

I think it's a stupid idea. He should enjoy his days without a girlfriend. Then when he does have one he can enjoy that too.

Well, in China, gettting a girlfriend may be harder then here, because of the laws of only one child. The guy's entire family needs him to get a girlfriend and get married so that they can pass on the family name.

Guys outnumber girls nearly 2:1 in many major universities in China and India.

Yeah, the guy is paying for the dinner - not the sex. Although it could go either way, I suppose.

As someone pointed out, guys outnumber girls 2:1 or even higher in some places. Government policy and parents attitudes mean that there are now more boys than girls in China, so competition is fierce.

This guy told his parents he didn't have a girlfriend because he was studying, now he feels desperate enough to hire a girlfriend for the special holiday. His parents shouldn't put him under so much pressure, and he shouldn't feel he has to lie to them about it.

I'm sure he was already under pressure to do well at university, from his parents and from society, the last thing he needs is to be bothered with finding a girlfriend right now. Besides, a girlfriend, and worse, a wife, will cost a lot of money anyway, so he should wait until he's been working for a few months after graduating.

Sometimes parents don't realize what they are doing to their kids.

I don't think it is wrong and I don't think it is prostitution either. The word 'rent' often refers to commodity which could imply seeing a girl as a commodity, in which I think is inappropriate.

But this is no big deal as I think you can easily find something like this even in the US, paying someone to be one's girlfriend for a day or two.

And it definitely is not about prostitution unless it involves paying for sex.

But I think thats beside the point. I don't see the relevance of hiring someone to be your girlfriend just to please your parents back home. If you think about the consequences, you would only get your parents all worked up only to be told later that it was never meant to be. Worse if all the neighbors know about the girlfriend which often happens in rural villages where the parents are proud to show off their future daughter-in-law.

The best thing is to sit down and explain to the parents and make them understand.

I will not say that the guy was wrong...

I'd say he was in a desperate situation...

Cause I suppose by college age you are expected to be dating someone and if you're not your family may be looked down upon...
Especially if your peers, siblings etc....are coupled of....

What I feel for him is sadness if anything else.

Just seems to me that it is just a glorified escort service.

I guess the discussion should be about the need for an escort service???

i don't think thats quite right but it's not me who has to resort to such low standards. if i were under the pressure he was under...i wouldn't have done that. i would have gone with out a girl friend it can't be that bad to his parents

I agree with you Nikki. I do feel sadness for him but even though he is at a college age dosn't mean you are expected to have a girlfriend. I know a lot of people who go to college/university and don't have girlfriends or boyfriends, but for this guy to stoop to that level in my opinion is just wrong.

glenn...

In a lot of countries indirect pressure is placed upon young people.

I have a friend in Nigeria who told me, if a man is not married at by the age of 30 he is looked at in a weird kinda way.

Traditionally people were not taught about love and compatibility, as they were married as part of a financial arrangement or because the family to be married into is a "good" one (most likely one with rank or money).

Kids who are born to parents which grew up under such traditional reign or thinking, are pressured. Even tho some parents don't intend to pressure, they do it.

Today we have somewhat shaken of that type of mentality and now we get involved with someone we're attracted to, with whom we are compatible and we decide with whom we wanna spend our life.

I can somewhat understand what might have driven this young man to want to "rent" a girlfriend.

The desire to please parents can drive people to do lots of "unorthodox" things.

It sound crazy, although I am a single man and a college student,I never think having no girlfriend is a big problem.

Really hoped everyone is like you right?
But one has to understand the point that everyone's life aint the same. That guy must have gone through terrible shit to have come to a state like this where he wants to take help of his cash to get a girlfriend.
Now he might also have been subjected to excess insults and discrimination in school and college.
You really cant blame the guy for what he's doin.
budiman
The advertisement seems strange now because he might be the first one to make it Smile However it might unavoidable things in future, especially in places where the boys are more than girls. Embarassed Just wait and see whether this type of ads will be flourish or not in the next decade.

You have to understand that China is a poor country with very old-fashioned and traditional ways of thinking. People work to get money, money to marry, marry to have a child, and have a child so they can work and repeat the same process. Belief in an afterlife is thrown in, too (people believe that the practice of offerings are essential to ancestors in the afterlife, lest they starve). So, to many a Chinese, having a girlfriend is important if only because they see it as "the next step in life".

But, yeah, Chinese New Year is a very major event in China, and possibly the only one or two weeks in a year where an average Chinese man can return home to see his parents.
jongoldsz
Thats awfully strange, but why is was it publicized, things like that probably happen every now and then.
Captain Fertile
I don’t think it is an issue.

Businessmen do this every day of the week.

They hire a very pretty and/or intellectual escort for that important business event or meeting to make a good impression with the other delegates or his boss.

Many escorts are hired by high-flying businessmen for their brains, charm or looks rather than any sexual contact.

This is exactly the same scenario in my eyes.

If you think China is poor, think again. Its economy is ranked 4th in the world right now. Its anything but poor. Granted, there are poor people in China, just like everywhere else... yes including the US.

Maybe it has the 4th largest economy but with a population of 1.3 billion people you would expect a large economy.

The fact still stands that it is, overall, a poor country when looking at standards of living. It is a developing country and therefore standards of living are rising but for the majority this is not yet a reality.

The percentage of poor in China would far out weigh that of any western country. Let alone the USA.

GDP per Capita it rates 109th @ $7,600

The USA rates 9th @ $43,500

These figures are far more meaningful when looking at the standard of living than the GDP (purchasing power parity) position you mentioned, as that is the total of the countries financial position not individuals.

(figures from the CIA fact book)

As to the original post. I don't see anything wrong with this. He is paying for what basically amounts to acting. There is no mention of sex so that is not prostitution.
Whether he should trick his family is hard to say. Maybe they pester him constantly about marriage so he is just trying to keep everyone happy and get them of his back.
At least that's how this story appears to me.
TribalArt
Well the fact that he wanted a 'honest persobn' would possibly mean that she may spill the beans about the whole situatuion.

And yes, its a bit like escort service. I neither condone it nor applaud escort but if I was the girl, I would want a bit more than that.
TomGrey
There will be LOTS more of this in both China and India, where sex-selection against girls means more girl fetuses were aborted, even many girls killed after birth.

Some 1000 to 800 boys to girls ratios in both countries lately, though for much longer in China with their one-child policy.

Previously girls were undervalued. Now, in China, for the last 200 million boys "born", there are only 160 million girls. That's 40 million boys will not find dates, and their one-child only boy parents might be faced with no grandkids.

Also look for more N. Korean girls to "escape" into China and become sex slaves/ concubines/ wives.

China needs women. Or something to do with their 40-60 million excess young men.
paul_indo
Good point Tom Grey.

For many years people in China and to some extent India have preferred male children to girls. I believe it is at least partly because they believe male children will be more capable of looking after their parents in their old age and also I believe the parents of females sometimes have to pay a dowry to the girls fiancee for the marriage.

The problem now is that, as you said Tom there are many more males than females in those societies so finding a wife is simply not possible for around 20% of the men.

It is feared that this may cause an increase in violence among young males, particularly rape. It is one of the major problems facing China at the moment.
bongoman
all I got to say is that it must be a slow news day, I mean come on I am sure this sort of things happens all the time anywhere in the world. Its even been the plot of a few movies!
ReubenWilliams
After he pays all that money for this pretened girlfriends, he'll inevitably meet the girl of his dreams who will fancy him because she thinks he's with this other girl who he hires who's stinning and then his courtship will twice as expensive leaving him totally broke by the end of it and absolutely unlovable.

Yeah it is pretty weird, you would have though he could have spent the same amount of money on a present for his parentsd and then talked to them about the pressure.

Laughing What a great idea, that makes the most sense without a doubt.

Maybe his inability to speak to his parents says more about his upbrinigng than his inability to find a girlfriend.

Very valid point!

True. He's just going to get himself into more trouble later when he really needs a girlfriend to settle down and get married. His parents will be furious if they ever find out (I'm sure they will).
