Pier/Sea fishing for Dummies

Captain Fertile
What items must someone have who wants to take up sea fishing off a pier.

Please remember this is in the North of England coast.

So can anyone supply a list of all the equipment you need - Right from what kind of rod and reel down to what bait to take on the day you go.

Please treat this question as coming from an idiot because I know NOTHING about fishing, would love to go, know nobody who does it but need to know what I would need to get started.

I get lost when people start talking about line strengths etc and rod strengths??? So please don't worry about offending me by aiming your advice too low. The fish have more brains than me when it comes to fishing.

Cheers

If the pier doesn't have benches, you'll want to take a folding chair.
You'll want a long heavy duty rod, usually called a surf casting rod.
Get a large capacity spinning reel.
A spinning reel will drain salt water out of the spool better,
and won't twist in your hand like a bait caster.
Large lead sinkers will be needed to keep the bait in one place.
You'll need something to keep the fish in,
either a basket with a long rope or a plastic bucket.
Get some fairly good sized hooks and some large swivels.
You need a knife for cleaning.
Take an old cloth to wipe your hands on.

Best way would be to take a walk on the pier and see what other successful fishmen are using. Smile

Also remember this(though it may seem like common sense): when pier fishing always look behind you before you cast!! I remember seeing this guy get snagged in the face because someone didn't look behind them prior to casting.

Also, in my opinion, the best bait is the bait you pull right out the water.

Good luck. Smile
