Science Gone Too Far?

Quote:
A December New York Times dispatch reports that among the hottest social status symbols in Tokyo is the cute-but-bizarre dog created by inbreeding, such as a blue Chihuahua or a white dachshund. However, inbreeding also produces a high number of deformities, and to get that dachshund, for example, the litter of five contained four dogs with almost unspeakably gross birth defects. Nonetheless, because of demand, dog inbreeding continues. And a Nottingham University professor warned in January that farmers are now at work in the United Kingdom breeding "stress" and "hostility" out of pigs and cows to make them more obedient en route to the slaughterhouse. The professor said the goal of such breeders is to create animal "vegetables." [New York Times, 12-28-06] [Daily Mail (London), 1-10-07]

well the thing is, if that helps to advance science, then why not? Have the dogs come down from tokyo and attacked you? We always torture animals for science, why stop the trend?

I don't think this at all is about advancing science, but completely abusing it. A blue chihuahua, used as a stupid social status symbol, just shows where the current world is going..

I think scientists have (should have) more important things to spend their time on than playing with these animals.

well the thing is, this is only the beginning of this. They have also made "ligers" tigers and lions mixed". Who knows where this will go next. Could prove a lot of benefit, maybe make animals that are used as labor, such as pack mules more beneficial. Oh, and mules are a natural production of inbreeding by the way, it's nothing new. Making say chickens that can both produce cow milk/eggs. Among other things can very well be beneficial for purposes of economy and efficiency.

It's just a logical progression of the selective breeding that's been going on for a long, long time. Anybody who cared about the animals they were breeding would try to avoid such birth defects, but some people are unscrupulous. The good news is that as the defect-less animals are bred to each other the defects will be slowly weeded out until they are rare.
