I have The Gimp 2.2 (currently), I want to know what kind of cool things you can do with it. For instance, I like sketching and I just started to teach myself some icon-like design (glossy-style). Sometimes I also color my drawings using it.
Things you can do with The Gimp
Try playing with all the different plug-ins and script-fu items. The GIMP can produce some pretty interesting results with some of those.
you can do close to everything you can do with photoshop. Gimp is also open source so if you have any coding/scripting experience you can do what you want with it
Most people don't have coding and scripting experience.
And also, Photoshop CS3 is coming out soon.
Photoshop owns GIMP any day IMO.

yes but many people, like me, do not have the money to afford Photoshop.
especially one of the CS's.

I love using GIMP and it comes close to performing like Photoshop. I won't say it equals Photoshop, but then it is free after all.
Check out these sites if you want to learn more about how to use it.

thanks for the links
if you put time into learning your way around Gimp, you'll find you can do anything you can do in Photoshop with The Gimp. You've just got to take take different procedures.
Are there any plug-ins for GIMP? I know that the best part I like of Photoshop is the ability to get plun-ins & filters. It makes things so much faster.
Any help?

IMO photoshop's CS series is a blot. I personally have photoshop CS2 which came with Creative Suite Pro but i still tend to use my copy of photoshop 7.0 cause A. loads faster, B. no extra crap i won't use, and C. now you can pick up a photoshop 7 licence very cheap.
Just look at this link
http://www.bizrate.com/multimediasoftware/adobe-photoshop-7.0-for-windows-express-professional-xp-full-full-version-for-pc-23101604---pid6432797/compareprices__keyword--photoshop+7.html
and then tell me that it is not cheap. Especially since it still offers tons of features. Just don't expect full automation of certain tasks, but then again you can always use photoshops recorder tool to automate tasks. I know i use the heck out of it.
