Layers of the mind

Layers of the mind.
All of us know that there is a thing called the "mind". But very few really try to understand what it is. So much so, that it has become a vague term! Is mind and intellect the same thing? What are the conscious, subconscious and unconscious layers of it? Is there a fourth Superconscious state?
Some great thinkers have deduced that the general mass of human population only utilize 4% of the mind and the remaining 96% remain untapped all through their lives. Even the most clever people seldom become conscious of more that 7% to 8% of their mental processes.
In ancient cultures, there was a saying that the root cause of bondage and freedom in the mortal realm is the mind itself.
Here is a matter I would like your opinion about:

Among the three mental powers of deduction, intuition and emotion, which takes you closest to truth?
By intuition, I mean Instinctive knowing without the use of rational processes.
By deduction are implied all the intellectual resourses of logic like deduction, induction and analysis.
By emotion I refer to the subtle feelings of honesty, love, faith, kindness and such finer qualities that are considered as pure.

I think one of the important differences between humans and computers is the power to use all those layers combined. Computers can use deduction and if you created a good randomizer there's almost something like intuition, but a computer is not capable of using emotion.
And one of the important differences between animals and humans is that animals only have intuition and emotion. They lack good deductional capabilities.
I guess if someone wants to find real truth he needs to know a real question. The nature of the question will help him to find the answer.
(For example: question: what is the answer to 1 + 1? Deduction tells me '2'; question: can I trust this person? Intuïtion tells me: 'yes' or 'no'; question: do I love him or her? Emotion tells me 'yes' or 'no')

Perhaps it would be better to say that they use only 4% of their mind at one time. Most of the brain is used for data storage (including links between data), while the only parts of the brain that are actually active (which is what would show up as 'use' in these tests) are the ones currently processing data, which I would consider to include the inputs from the five senses.

You have to remember how to get home, what your name is, the tune to the 588-2300: empire commercial, et cetera. But since you're not actively thinking about those things, the parts of the brain responsible for them do not show up as active.
Actually, if all of your brain did become active at once, causing you to think about every memory of your life at once, it would be quite unpleasant, so I'm glad it doesn't work that way. (I get overwhelmed just trying to think of two or three separate things at once)

Additionaly, why would the human body be designed/evolved (depending on your belief) with a huge, mostly useless organ to support? If we NEVER used 90+% of our brains, people born without the superfluous 90% would have advantages over the rest of us, such as needing less food, water, and air, or having a more muscle per bodyweight.

I agree with that. Its true that often more than half the puzzle is solved if we ask the right question. But arriving at the right question is not easy. The mind is not a static thing, its a dynamic force.
Thoughts are not garbage, they make us what we are. They really have power over us. That is why thinking positively is so important. Positive and creative ideas, thoughts that are generous and beneficial to all boost the mental energy level. And thoughts of hate, jealousy and anger, ideas to harm others actually drain our power.
The mind is in a state of unrest. It never keeps still. It moves around among eight to fifteen, or even more subjects in a single second! Most of the time we are completely unaware of this. We can only be aware of this aspect of the mind if we try to concentrate or meditate on a single subject. Try to keep the mind focussed on one idea only and think of nothing else.
In general the mind is scattered into several subjects at a given time and jumping from one thought to the next very quickly, like a crazy monkey jumping from branch to branch. Consider single thoughts as mental rays. It is like light rays criss-crossing and travelling in every direction. When the mind is one-pointed and concentrated it is like light passing through a magnifying glass. This concentrated light has manifold more power than scattered light.
Also, there are external signs of mental focus. First, the breathing becomes slow. More the concentration, slower is the breath. Second, the eyes become more still. The eyeball constantly rolls around. When we concentrate, the eye movement is also slowed down. Like reverse engineering, these symptoms can be taken advantage of and the mind can be made to become one-pointed. By Looking fixedly on a single point and breathing slowly, we can concentrate better. Very Happy

Very Happy What is the real purpose for us humans in this world?

Are Humans the ideal being of the highest order?

Actually we cause maximum harm to the ecosystem and the environment and pollute the whole planet to control and exploit whatever we can. Humans have no patience and foresight and want everything NOW! So we destroy and plunder every resource on our path living or non-living and consume them until everything is exhausted. We have no idea what harmony is!

The only good thing in us is the thirst for knowledge and the spirit to take up the challenge to explore the unknown. So, this must be the real purpose for Human beings:
To explore and to know.
We would certainly become wiser and happier once we learn to live in harmony with nature rather than in constant strife with foreign and domestic elements.
