o nice, thanks
According to fastcars.net the fastest car is the Mclauren F1. It is supposed to have 620 horsepower and its supposted to go like 240 mph. However, if you are talking about acceleration from 0 to 60 the the 1994 Dauer 962 LeMans takes the prize with a 0 to 60 time of 2.6 sec.
The bugatti veyron with the crazy engine and such accelerates pretty well but I think its too heavy to be one of the world's fastest cars.

Wow, do we need to define what a "car" is? How about the ThrustSSC, a turbofan jet-powered car ? Its the current land speed record holder at 763MPH. Are we limiting it to consumer vehicles?

Before I was talking about street legal cars. But WOA to break the speed of sound in a car would be freakin SWEEET!
How about the motorcycle record 350 mph!! that would be awesome

The Bugatti Veyron seems to hold the quickest 0-60 time and the highest MPH for a street legal car at 252MPH all thanks to it's AWD system, quad-turbo 16 Cylinder power plant.
Good lord, talk about street legal fast! Wanna run that thing on the German AutoBahn.

It's the Bugatti Veyron for the worlds fastest street legal car.
1001 horse power! It's not really all that heavy, it's smaller than a mustang.

Sounds amazing...from wiki... not only the fastest, but the quickest, too, it seems.

| The Veyron is the quickest production car to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) with an estimated time of 2.5 seconds. It reaches 60mph in approximately 2.46 seconds. It also reaches 200 and 300 km/h (124 and 186 mph) in 7.3 and 16.7 seconds respectively. This makes the Veyron the quickest accelerating production car in history. |
Top speed of 249mph(quoted), but

Bugatti Veyron is the fastes street legal car at the moment but I believe McLarenMercedes have their eyes on this record so watch this space on the next few months if they can find a way of getting 1000bhp from the engine onto the road without melting the tires in two seconds flat as they discovered when a tuning company tried.
McLaren are pushing Mercedes to produce another car along the lines of the F1 and SLR. Its an exciting time for Mercedes.
That said I personally don't think the Veyron has much to realistically fear for the forseeable future.

Even though I think this is cool as hell from an engineering standpoint, can someone explain why we really give a damn? Is there anywhere, with the exception of the autobahn, where you can use that sort of power? Why are we so fascinated with million dollar toys of limited usefulness? I mean, you could buy a 911 turbo and do 0-60 in 3.4 sec instead of 2.4 secs and have almost $900,000 left over for a nice meal.
for the vintage car that would be Shelby Cobra.
