So its been a couple of weeks since I have posted. I was going to name the post Tidbits O' Wisdom, but I didnt get a very good response from that last time. So I decided to try this new title .
I am not going to say annonymous but I simply cannot find the author, possiby Groucho Marx.
The older I get the more I realize that the things I thought were so important to me, really are not that important. That faster PC that I wanted to spend all that money on really won't bring me happiness. More than likely it will take me further away from it. That video game I had to play till 11pm at the cost of spending time with my family, will be forgotten 3 days after I beat it. I could go on and on about THINGS that I thought were important that I ended up being a let down.
I am getting tired of being sold a false bill of goods by the world. Telling me that I have to have this or that, or look like this or that to be happy. But are people really getting happier? I don't think so. You can argue with me till your blue in the face, but I can look in just about any man's or woman's face and SEE whether they are happy or not. And generally they are not.
There is an old Buddist proverb that talks about heaven and hell. In hell, everyone is starving, not because of lack of food, for there is more than enough to satify. Everyone there has chopsticks, but they are too long for anyone to be able to feed themselves.
Heaven is very much the same way; the same food, the same chopsticks, but everyone is satisfied and happy. Why? Because everyone feeds each other and there is no one that does not have enough.
People are social creatures. We grow stronger when we we build others up and in turn have others build us up. Yet people are forsaking what they know is true for a lie. We choose things, work, activities, distractions, over the people that should be the most important things in our lives.
In my last marriage, I chose to live in the world of Everquest, instead of dealing with my wife and working our issues out. I have almost lost my my wife and soulmate over my obsession with computers.
This year I decided to put the first thing as the first thing. My family is what matters the most and that is where I want my time and energy to go into, because in 40 yrs, I am not going to say "Why didn't I spend more time perfecting my Druid" I MAY (but hopefully not) say, "Why didn't I spend more time with my family".
As a community, I urge you to really think about what is important in your life. Are they really going to matter in the end? Are you going to surrounded with things that won't bring you comfort when your time on this earth is short, or will have friends and family that will?
