Suggestions for 3D designing?

xyberz
I just wanted to ask if anyone could help suggest to me about designing 3D objects or point me in the right direction?

I'm a total beginner when it comes to that sort of thing. I'm not sure how much talent you need to have before hand to make it worth while. I used to draw pictures before, actually replicate pictures that I saw. Unfortunately I was never really any good a freehand drawing or drawing things off the top of my head. Not really sure if it's a curse or not. Laughing

Hopefully the suggestion will be something that will ease me into 3D designing and not jumping in head first. Very Happy

Also just wanted to say that I'll be mostly designing mechanical things, nothing really organic at all.

Great program by Google to draw almost anything in 3d very quickly.

I would recommend Blender to start with. Although it looks very intimidating at first, this WikiBook will teach you everything you need to know, and it starts with the very basics first. If Blender is too complicated for you at first, try Anim8r instead. It's pretty simple and there are several tutorials for it on the Anim8r page.

Hope this is of some use to you, and good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion Eepman & Petee. Sounds like a good place to start.

I have a quick comparison question. I'm wondering how Sketchup compares to Blender and Anim8or? I've used it a little and have the tutorials for the program. It seems pretty easy, but unfortunately I didn't dive deeper into the program yet, so I still have much more to learn and figure out.

From my limited experience with Sketch Up I think it's mainly for creating 3D buildings and such, although it is possible to create other things. It is pretty simple and easy to use, though lacking good exporting and rendering features. Blender and Anim8r have more options for exporting, modeling, and rendering, but likewise are more complicated. I guess it just depends on what you'll be modeling.

Thanks Petee, you've answered my question quite nicely. Unfortunately my designing will not only be limited to buildings, so sticking with Sketchup will probably be not in my best interest.

I'll have to give Blender, and possibly Anim8tor a try to see which one I prefer to work with. Given the information that you posted regarding both programs, it seems like Blender may have more readily available support, so I'll have to try that one first.

Thanks once again for the suggestions. I'm in very much of great appreciation. Very Happy

As 3D programs go, Blender is a little different than the industry standards, MAYA, 3D Studio Max etc. However, it's free and once you get used to it, it's fast. And even though it is free it's grown into a professional level app.

What's really cool for you is that there is a large and very supportive online Blender community, chock full of helpful people and tutorials. Give yourself time, regardless of the application, it will take you some time to learn how to design and model in 3D space. Lighting and texturing also take time but really help your models to look great.

Just give yourself time...

i wont highly recommend sketchup first, u can build everything, even character modeling, look it up in the forum and it's free, blender is nice, but he's a newbie, and wants something really easy, so go with sketchup, then jump into max or maya, if you are serious about 3d modeling, im learing max right now and it's pretty sweet,

Cinema 4D is expensive, but it sure gets the job done and it's simple to use! C4D is really a great tool, buy it! Learn it! And use it! Very HappyVery HappyVery HappyVery Happy Idea
