Gaining weight?

chrismen
I thought this would be fun to ask but I am serious. I have been trying to gain weight for a bit of time now. I eat everything and I am just not doing it. Is there a good way to gain weight healthily bc I feel like I am being very unhealthy and this could be bad in the future.
mayank_abhishek
I think this is a great idea!! Because you don't gain anything by staying pencil slim! Very Happy

Umm... I'm sure there are lots of websites out there that can help you getting information on how to GAIN weight HEALTHILY. Check those out, I've never really looked into it.

If you eat everything and aren't seeing any results, obviously you aren't eating correctly then.

The "correct" way to gain weight is to have a healthy diet while lifting weights. Muscle weighs more than fat. When you are weight training, to increase your mass, you want to lift heavier weights while also increasing your caloric intake. Such as if you have a daily caloric intake of 2500 (the average for an active male), pump it up to 5000.

Eat foods with a lot of nutritional benefits such as fruits and veggies along with meat products that are lean and high in protein. Such as chicken breasts, tuna, salmon and others.

Protein supplements help, but there are several caveats to this:

1. Whey protein is a fast burning, anabolic protein, meaning it's best ingested right before you work out, or right after WITH a high-carbohydrate meal. Leads me to point two...
2. If you're trying to gain weight, don't follow the no-carbs mantra...you need those carbs for energy. If you don't eat carbohydrates, your protein will get burned instead. Yes, this includes the protein that's already in your muscle mass. Degeneration is bad.
3. Casein protein is a good slow-burning protein, which means it's good right after a workout or right before you sleep. A proper casein protein solution will prevent muscle breakdown (see #2).

So if you're really serious about it, work out hard and consistently, and DON'T simply ingest whey protein six times a day. That's a waste. You need to alter your protein intake based on the time of day and your nutritional needs.

Amen to what those above me said--carbohydrates, protien, and lifting weights and building your muscles are going to help you out the best, but make sure you're still eating healthily though, because you can still be skinny but not healthy, you know? And that's no good either. :p Some people just have a crazy metabolism that allows them to eat whatever and still stay slim, so there isn't really anything wrong with being skinny...but if you look unhealthily skinny (ribs or other bones being extremely defined, something along those lines) you might have a parasite or worm that's sucking all the fat out of you. Yucky thought, but could be a possibility, unless you've been a normally trim person all your life, then I wouldn't worry.

thanks for the advice, because in track/cross country season, I end up like anorexicly thin, even though i eat the right amounts of food and stuff

How to gain weight

Weight gain is something that isn't easy to do and you probably know this already. I know first hand because it is something I have to do every day. I am an ectomorph by genetics, which is the "skinny body type" and the one with the fast metabolism which makes gaining so hard for guys like me. The key to weight gain is to do everything BIG. You have to eat big, to lift big, to get big. Say that over and over again in your head until you fully understand it. A lot of people think weightlifting is the key to gaining weight, and I won't argue, it is an extremely important part. BUT, there is another thing that is just as important when it comes to how to gain weight, and that is your diet.

So, to put it as simply as possible, there are 5 simple steps to how to gain weight, and here they are:

1) Count how many calories you eat in a normal day. Don't change anything, just eat like you normally would and count how many calories you consumed. This is an extremely important step, so try to be as exact as possible. Also, weigh yourself.

2) Starting the day after you counted calories, eat 500 calories MORE then you normally do. So, lets pretend that the day you counted calories you counted 2000. For the rest of the week, you would now eat 2500 calories a day. Instead of eating 3 big meals a day or eating all day all the time, spread those calories out over 5-6 smaller meals. Eat one meal every 2 and a half to 3 hours. To get big, you have to eat big! Remember that.

3) Weightlifting! Get in the gym and lift! This is another important step to how to gain weight, so make sure you are doing it correctly. For more information on weightlifting workout routines and splits, read the workout routines and splits section.

4) At the end of that week, weigh yourself. You'll notice you're gaining just after one week! Now, don't expect to see a 10lb increase. Gaining anymore then 1 or 2 pounds a week is unhealthy and means you're putting on way to much fat. So look for 1 or 2 pound gains at the end of the week. Don't sound like much? You can be gaining 5-8 pounds a month!

5) Heres an important one. At some point, you will stop seeing weight gain. At this point, you will have to eat even more. So, when you stop gaining for at least 2 weeks, it means it is time to start eating an extra 250 calories a day. Every time you see you haven't gained weight for at least 2 weeks, add an extra 250 calories.

I guess it'd be possible to start gaining weight after one or two weeks...

But if you're trying to gain muscle MASS, you won't start seeing results until after about five or six months.

Training takes time. Don't try and rush your way through it because it won't work.

i tried eating every thing i can but still can not be able to add more fat to my body

As mentioned before, exercise to build up muscle. That will bring up weight. Or stop worrying about it if you know you're eating healthfully - some people gain less weight than others.

You don't say what kind of weight you want to gain. I assume it is lean muscle mass. Many people say that low carb is not the way to go and that it's bad for you and that you feel like shit after a few days. Do some research on this yourself and make up your own mind. But before you make up your mind read some actual scientific research findings (have a look at Greg Ellis) not just opinions. Many of the opinions out there, even by 'experts' in the field are just that - opinions. In many instances, the conclusions they draw are not supported by their own research findings - but as the evidence from their own research either doesn't fit in with their own preconceived ideas or the 'expert' or 'expert group' is being funded by a body that has a vested interest in a specific finding - that's the finding they'll get. So, whatever eating plan you do decide on, make sure that you not only train enough (using resistance training - that is weights) but also that you get enough sleep and rest and do not train 2 days in a row. The obvious stuff - whatever eating plan you decide on - cut down or eliminate all refined carbs and alcohol. What you do eat - meat, fish, shellfish and fats (along with fruit and vegetables if you decide on this route) - make sure you eat enough of it to allow your body to build muscle in response to the training you're doing. Increase the amount you eat a little at a time and experiment until you get the right balance for you. Hopefully you'll start see positive results in a month or two. Good luck and I hope it goes well.

Eat a lot of protein (about 1-1.5 grams per pound of body weight), eat a lot of carbs, and lift hard!

the best advise i will give u is i think u have got more basal metabolic rate and which drains all u eat early

advise

1) eat big nutritious diet with more interval in between
2) dont eat in between meals,,dont munch anything
3) try to eat 3 times a day only,,with good nutritious meal
