Sunrise from West. "Retrograde Motion"

Babsta
The science of astronomy states that the speed of planet Mars decreased in its course towards the eastern direction and on Wednesday the 30th July 2003, the planet movement totally stopped and Sun rose from the west on Mars. This happened only once and this weird phenomenon is called Retrograde Motion. Scientists believe this will happen to all planets once. And our planet is right next to Mars. Sad
This might happen tommorrow who knows.. if your bedroom windows open to the westside, just imagine one day waking up and finding the sun shining through the window.
Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) also predicted this as one of the major signs of the Day of Judgement : “One of the signs of the hour, the sun will rise from the west, where no longer Tauba (forgiveness) will be granted”
And religious scholars say this will happen only once and from the next day onwards the sun will continue to rise from the east. How strange.

No, you are a little confused here.
The main thing to realise is that the retrograde motion is with respect to us on Earth, not the sun. Mars continues as normal to move in orbit around the Sun and the sun will rise and set for any Martians watching just as it always does. It is the position or Mars relative to us that demonstrates Retrograde motion.
This little gif file demonstrates what happens:

Retrograde motion is not at all a rare occurence. Viewed from Earth, all planets will demonstrate retrograde motion at certain times. That gif demonstrates in nicely.

As for the sun rising in the west, if that were ever to happen I doubt anyone would remain alive to see it. It would mean that the Earth had stopped spinning and started spinning the other way. Without an external force acting upon the planet, it is impossible for it to reverse its direction of spin. Any external force strong enough to cause such an effect would have disastrous consequences for this planet. For a start, the inertial effect on the planet's oceans would cause tidal waves the like of which have probably never before occured. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the tectonic plates were ripped apart too. In fact, I don't think the planet would survive such an occurence.

Maybe a more qualified scientist could shed more light on the possible consequences.

So you mean to say, the sun doesnt actually rise from the west for any planet it's just how it appears to us from our Planet. So the sun won't rise from the west on earth ever? It will only appear that way for the martians and other planets? I need to do more research on this.
so what happened on Wednesday the 30th July 2003? Isn't possible that the earth actually stops spinning and then start spinning in the opposite direction for a period of time?
If what you are saying is true, why are there so many articles about the Mars's movement actually stopping in its eastern course and starting in the opposite direction for a day?

I did some more reading on it and I think what you are saying adds up. Retrograde motion may be or may not be the reason behind the rising of the sun from west before the day of judgement, it might be something different altogether, but the prediction of Prophet Mohammad (saw) will definitely come true as it's the will of the Almighty.

The thing to bear in mind is relativity. Relativity theory teaches that no point in the universe is special - the laws of physics apply just the same. This, in turn, means that terms like 'East' and 'West' are themselves relative. You have to ask 'East relative to what?'. The question of whether the Sun rises in the West or East, therefore, is dependant on the position of the observer. For an observer on Earth then the Sun will rise in the East unless something catastrophic occurs and either the Earth's spin around it's axis is altered or the Earth's orbital path or velocity is altered drastically. In both cases it is unlikely that we could survive such an occurance (as Docbeaver points out).
Retrograde motion will definitely NOT be behind the Koranic prediction of the Sun rising from the West. It would take, as stated, either a change in the Earth's spin or a drastic change in Earth's orbit. Retrograde motion is only an apparent motion which, again, depends on the relative position of the observer. If the observer is on Earth and the observation is of the Sun then there is no retrograde motion.
