The bottom line is: people with boring mundane lives that don't see any potential for change often take a strong interest in celebrities to fill the void.

And yes, the celbs are always overhyped. In todays 24x7 news enviorment, the media needs stuff to tell and so senstaionalise, everything, and celebs are an easy source of news and gossip which people will react to as they are the ones people know bcos of their profession.
