At the moment google is the most used search engine. But wikipedia founder is trying to compete with google. What do you think?

Wikia, a for-profit corporation created by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, is preparing to launch a search engine that will leverage the user-driven model that has contributed to the massive success of the Wikipedia.
The Wikia corporation plans to launch the search engine with financial backing from online retailer Amazon (some sites are erroneously reporting that Amazon is involved in the development process, but please note that they are just providing financial resources for Wikia at this point) and a handful of other technology companies, |

Not a bad idea, it requires people to contribute to it, and they might not if another search engine exists, though, it will be, once it gets going, a very good search engine.
But Google is so much more than a search engine.

I think Soulfire has just summed it up nicely. Even if the Wikipedia founder managed to create a search engine as good as Google, Google's large number of other functions and tools will more than likely ensure it's continuing success. Plus, even if a search engine greater than Google was created, when so many people are already using Google, even for something so simple, it would be difficult getting people to switch.

No, it is quite easy for people to switch, that happened to yahoo years ago, Yahoo was the king of Search ENgines for years until google steped in and in a blink of an eye took the leadership.
Exactly !!!
Google is not just a search engine anymore. It was, once upon a time. Now its a huge giant putting its hands everywhere. Why, it even bought YouTube even though it had its own Google Videos.
I think Google has grown up and cannot be easily displaced.
If somebody starts something new like that, they would have to try very hard to get users to shift. Most people unconsciously type google.com into the address bar when they want to search something. (ie when the omnipresent google search boxes are not to be found)
More competitors are better for us but I don't think Wikipedia will able to compete giants like Google is. At least not in begining, maybe after some years.
i agree with bulek coz i'm not sure he can beat google.
google have a solid engine as search engine and it's will to beat
If it's broken, don't fix it. Google is a very good search engine, and has been the most popular engine. Now that Google is so big, it could literally buy their competitors, despite the cost (like Youtube). And even if they do create a new search engine, Google Video/Images/Froogle/etc. will still be better.
Google will win as always! Wikipedia isn't a search engine and thousands of people access google per day
Get ready to see thousands of discussions about if any website is notable or self promotion or similar squat. Wikipedia is what is broken.
Google PC ?
That's a new one ...
Google OS also huh ?
| Quote: |
Google certainly could introduce their own PC with their own OS, but it seems unlikely. |
Where is Google going ? At this rate, Google might take over the whole world , I guess.
And they're going to name them Google cubes ?
| Quote: |
Google is in negotiations with Walmart to sell cheap PC's, possibly known as "Google Cubes", that connect you to the internet." |
If this turns out to be real, Google sure is taking over the world
Google PC is a rumor is way to make people think about google. When you hear google PC or google OS, you think OMG google is more than I thougt I wonder what other things they have been doing without me knowing. Nowadays PC are really cheap, really fast and do want we want them to do so in which way will google compete against Windows PCs and Macs?
Google is already a Market leader in Search Engine
AND
GOOGLE is not just a SEARCH ENGINE now... It is now more than that...
There are already more FAMOUS competetiors for Google - Y!, MYESN, etc...
And Google is not really going to worry about the starter pack when it is already a leader among the professional packs...
Anyways ALL THE BEST and BEST OF LUCK for the WIKI Foundation.
I can't see user driven search to work. I understand user connection is important now, but not for everything...
Seems it would be quite hard time waiting for wiki ... but as like google for search, I also use wiki for get knowlegdge on specific topic.

I've been a google user since when it was the number four search engine behind AOL, Yahoo, MSN, and AltaVista. I'd personally be willing to make the switch to a wiki search engine if it was good enough. I use google because it's (in my view) the best.
I think there is only one competitor of google ..and that is microsoft live seach at live.com
they have improved much..n may beat google in coming time.
that would definitely be a good idea! wikipedia is really a great source.

Yes, that relly depends you know. People will want to et thir own sites included. So they will. And then people will go on it to see their mates website. Then they will like it, i mean, wikipedia is just so good that it could compete with so much mjor search enjine. He has pulled off other great thing why not this eh?
Yeah I dunno, I might be shy about using it for real research since I don't trust wiki info 100% I will keep starting out with the google search engine....

At the very least they could build a better wikipedia search function before they work on a search engine... wikipedia search is annoying.
