" Yahoo was the most trafficked Web brand for 2006, with approximately 354.5 billion page views through Nov. 30, according to new data released this week by Nielsen Media Research Web-tracking units. The data, which took a broad look at the most popular media of the year, showed that MySpace garnered the second-highest number of page views, while Google placed third. "

I'm sure one reason Yahoo! has more page views is because their site is more complicated. It's so easy to get lost on their website compared with Google, so users are bound to view more pages. (However obviously this only adds on a few million page views.) And to get the best out of MySpace you have to keep continuously opening new pages, in Google you don't have to do it so often. So it's not too surprising that MySpace beat Google on page views there.

What I'd like to know is where all these hits on Yahoo! come from. No one I know uses it, I never hear people say "Yahoo it" (in opposed to "Google it"). If you ask me it's seriously overrated; I don't see why you would use it instead of Google. Another point, Yahoo! have their own version of Google AdSense but how many websites have you seen it on in the last month? I've seen it once in the last month, it's such a rare occasion that I actually remember. Yet I have seen Google AdSense on well over 100 different websites in the same time.

Who uses Yahoo!? And why do they use it? Is there something I've missed?

I simply can't believe it. You can find me daily on Google and Never on Yahoo or MySpace.
We really need to know who is responsible for the Google counter and the MySpace counter.

Did you knew that in Holland "googlellen" (I don't know the exact spelling) is listed in most of the common dictionaries? Shocked

yahoo works much faster by myside than Google and gives more related searching result. I'm using it more often than google now.

Our local Yahoo may have gained more this year, they merged their site with that of Channel 7's, creating Yahoo7 (rival to Nine Network's and Microsoft's NineMSN)...

It'd be interesting to see what the Aussie figures are between them two.

Yahoo! works faster than Google?#@!

Wait a minute, Yahoo! has so many images and other content on all of their pages compared to Google. How on earth is does it work faster than Google? Google has almost nothing on every page and is designed to load quickly, something that it does very very well. It is also massively simpler than Yahoo!, another reason for its success.

Google gets very relevant searches for me, unless I search something really obscure. I never use Yahoo! and I always find what I'm looking for on Google.

Most Firefox users have the Adblock Plus add-on (which is really recommended) and disables all images from several sites so they don't have to wait before all those images are done with loading.
Possibilities are endless these times.

I totally agree with the fact that Google gives better search results and the lack of any contents is a really good point, since it is a search engine, not a news-provider, ...

I didn't know about the Adblock Plus add-on on Firefox, I'm an IE7 user. text is loaded in on web pages before images by default, so I will see the general content of a web page before it has finished, this is true of Google (with around 2 images on every page) and Yahoo!, of course. However I still have to wait for all the other content on Yahoo! to load as it is more dependant on the graphics - in fact they are necessary for the user to be able to easily use the website.

Google is primarily a search engine but are branching into further fields to hold their dominance in the market, awareness of their brand name and obviously to profit from new ventures.

That's right, but so far they are hiding that untill you click on a text link (the 'more »' link) which will open a small window kind so you don't have to load a new web page until you click on 'even more »'.

If you are not convinced about the fact that Google is faster, look at the source of both pages and try if you can find 'any' difference Wink

Simply cannot belive this.

Its pretty logical, really.

For Yahoo, if you want to search, you go to yahoo.com, for email, you go to yahoo.com, for news, you go to yahoo.com

With Google, for a search, you go to Google.com, for email, you go to Gmail.com, and for news, news.google.com.

Everything is located at one stop for Yahoo, but for Google, its at various number of websites. Smile

Yes, you're right, LostOverThere.
Everything on Yahoo! is done by using sub-domains or the Yahoo! site. Furthermore, Yahoo! and Google are both available in different languages - Yahoo! uses sub-domains whereas Google uses totally different web sites (google.com, google.co.uk, google.de etc). Remember that hits on a sub-domain are counted towards the hits on the main domain name, not a separate site.

If you also take into account the other websites Google owns (youtube.com, for example) then I'm sure the hits Google - as a company - rise way above the hits Yahoo! gets.

So that's settled then. Well done, LostOverThere - I'm glad you thought of that, something so simple yet so overlooked.

Hi there,

In the good old days, would I had said that I would support Yahoo! But as an old Geocitizens has I lost everything for Yahoo! The only that I've left at Yahoo! the the Yahoo! Mail. But as soon I can get an Google Mail account is this also past. I don't think that anyone can take Google's possision as the leading search engine, and their force is as it had been mentioned here, that they don't use as much graphics at their meain search engine, as others like Yahoo! and Msn. By the way wasn't either Yahoo! who was leading in the start of Internet, but Alta Vista.

Ignore Yahoo! Support Google as they supporting you!

Cheers!

I've always liked yahoo better as an overall web search engine. I always seme to get better results. Though I usually prefer to use google for pictures...

At Google, you go to google.com, type in a search term, get results and immediately leave their site: each request is only two page views - or only one page view if you use a toolbar.

At Yahoo, you have many different pages and services to look at and use, all under the same domain: so each visitor will view more pages.

It would be interesting to compare Google vs Yahoo in terms of visits rather than page views.

Yet it's ironic, isn't it, that yahoo uses google to search the web?
Quote:
Yahoo has both a human-edited directory and a spider-based index provided by Google. Sponsored results are provided by Overture and appear at the top of the results page and additional entries are presented at the bottom of the page whenever a next page is available. If you want to get into Yahoo's directory, you should use their Business Express plan.

Stupid yahoo. Google is t3h 1337est Smile (The leetest. Aka, the greatest.)
