The only time my computer ( well, both of my computers ) detects my SONY HANDYCAM is when I click 'MAKE VCD" and it only picks it up for a couple seconds. How can I fix this

You may be having a problem with your firewire connection.
have it checked out.
I had a similar problem too with my camera. Sent it in for a checkup and discovered that I had short circuited the firewire board. Cost me $2000 to replace it...sigh,.
