cannot used scandisk

i try to used scandisk in my computer...

i right click my c:,then properties>tools>error checking>check now

then i click options 'automatically fix file system error' and 'scan for and attemp recovery of bad sectors'...

and then i need to restart my computer...

during windows loading,it said my computer cannot be scan...

why???

i used windows xp service pack 2...

Possible that you need to re-install windows XP or just use a repairal tool.

If you have your Windows XP cd, try booting from the cd and press R at the first menu to go to recovery console.

Once you get to the command prompt, run chkdsk /r to run a full chkdsk on the drive.

It sounds like you may have a startup appliction that is preventing Windows from gainging exclusive access to the drive.

i think windows cannot do scandisk for some reason, not that it cannot boot. so no need to format it.
