Hey, is Appserv compatible with Windows 98 SE? Because I plan to use my old Win98 comp as the server, instead of screwing around with my main WinXP desktop.
i run two Arch LAMP servers. its not difficult to set up a lightweight linux/apache/mysql/php/openssh server and access it remotely on windows w/ putty. send me a pm if you're interested in instructions.
Hey, I installed Appserv on my Win98 comp, apache seems to work fine, but mysql doesn't seem to work. I logged in to phpmyadmin, and they wrote there unable to connect to server...
Wamp server is very nice and convenient. You could also try xampp, but that doesn't have mod_rewrite or something enabled by default, so I switched.
hello try xampp at www.apachefriends.org... it is a complete serverside for lamp hope it can help it.. it will give you the latest for php version and for mysql latest version.

Apache2triad is very good, it has all u need for a server including mail!
Is very simple to install, is very secure and it has a good feedback on ur problems....it is freeware allso
u can find answers on install problems in here http://apache2triad.net/faq.php
XAMPP!!! it is great. Windows or Linux. It installs and configs everything for you. Comes with the following:
Apache
PHP + PEAR
PERL
MySQL
mod_php
mod_perl
mod_ssl
OpenSSL
phpMyAdmin
Webalizer
Mercury Mail Transport System
Netware System
JpGraph
FileZilla FTP Server
mcrypt
eAccelerator
SQLite
WEB-DAV + mod_auth_mysql
I use this and love it. Works perfect for me!
here is a link to their website
http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html
Why dont better use Uniform Server
is the best one i have tried
http://www.uniformserver.com
The end all be all of the server combo packages is http://www.apache2triad.net/.
it has everything you could want in a server and some optional stuff on top of that. Starts you with Email, PHP, MySQL, Perl, Python, FTP, and a hundred other little tweaks.
Has a nice web based command center to change your settings as well.
It is not so hard to instal Apache yourself and configure it to work with PHP. It is 5 click Apache instalation, 6 click php instalation and 3 lines copy and paste of configuration
and you will not have many waste with it like

PERL, MySQL, OpenSSL, Webalizer, Mercury Mail Transport System, Netware System, JpGraph, FileZilla FTP Server, mcrypt, eAccelerator, SQLite, WEB-DAV
|
that you exactly don't want
I use this command to satisfy that
# USE="apache2" emerge php
and it was. No configuration. Everything done. I like my Gentoo.
There are variety of ready to install packages available for you to install...
I recommend Apache2triad for its features..
And Wamp/Xamp for their neatness..
Dont take risks.. Install manually!!!
I would have to say I agree with JayBee

this is true its so easy to install I dont know why people bother using other tools.
the advantage is if you go further down the line of servers etc etc a good solid standard instalation is allot more flexible.
cheers
I use Arch Linux (http://archlinux.org), Apache, MySQL, PHP. Works like a charm. Go LAMP!!

yeah its pretty easy to install and that way you know where to look and how to fix if anything goes wrong not like with a automated installation
