Apache Server just "kills" my machine

The other day I decided to "take the plunge", so to speak, and install Apache server and PHP on my laptop so that I can test PHP locally. However, I have now decided to remove it as the Apache server just constantly runs at anything between 60%-90% CPU usage (sometimes up to 95%) which is not allowing me to work efficiently at all.

My laptop isn't high spec, but it's certainly no slouch.

1.86GHz CPU
1GB RAM
Tons of HD space (around 30GB free on a 55GB partition)

Does anybody else have this problem?

Try using Xampp

http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

Then go to your OS

then download the installer (much easier to install)

Sorry man, but installing isn't the problem. I can install it fine. The problem I'm finding is that my machine just cannot do anything whilst the apache service is running because it just hogs all the CPU usage. I've uninstalled it now and won't bother again. I'll just have to upload to frihost whenever I want to test php files.

I am on windows and I am using KFWS server. I also have problem with Apache, with instalation and configuration. Now, I am testing my scripts on localhost and then on real host and Apache. KFWS is very small server but it is easy for configuration. I am just using different port for testing different sites, and what is best for me, it is not important to have only one root folder, like on Apache and IIS.

Currently I'm using Xampp, which is better then running Apache and php together. My Usage is between 0-10% depending on what I am doing it may go up. Though, I do not use my apache for a 24/7 web server, I use it for a testing one, and its usually down from 10 pm to 3 pm depending when it gets turned off.

Maybe, if your willing, try Xampp its way better.
