Any flat-file database system would be the easiest to install since there is no databases involved. However, there is no solid advantage in systems as in regaurds to the control panel to manage the site on big CMSes. Smaller CMSes have the advantage of using no fancy javascript and images which make administration much harder if you can barely understand how to use a computer, but faster if you do.

IMHO, you're right, mambo seems to disappear. But you could try Joomla. It is a mambo-spin off (Joomla 1.0.0 is the same code like mambo 4.5.3).

Joomla is a very good cms, not just for beginners.

Another very interesting system is PHP-Fusion.

Flat-file cms are not a good choice I think. They are very limited in performance and stability. And the installation of a mysql-based system is not more difficult. For flat-file based systems you have to care for file permissions, php-safe-mode-restrictions and many other things.

So, my advice for a beginner-friendly cms: Joomla or PHP-Fusion.

That depends on the CMS. For example, I've never had any problem with FlatForum's database due to how it handles and organizes it. Best of all, I just upload it, change a few values, and its ready to go - no installation process required.

MySQL is more difficult to install for the newbie whose never run a website before, IMO. Why? Because you have to deal with databases, usernames, and passwords. Sometimes that can mess a newbie up. I remember when I installed my first system - phpBB, and I had to try a few times because I didn't know what values went where and how to do it.
