websites for free images

I'm looking for good sites to find stock photography for cheap or free. I always prefer to take the pictures myself if I can, but I usually end up looking for some images of items I can't find personally.

Can anyone share some good ideas?

I'm looking for sites that give explicit permission to use their pictures.

I find that StockXchng terms of use can be ambiguous and contradictory at times. Some require you to notify the photographer when you are using their pics but nothing is said about whether you are required to actually get the photographer's approval. Quite often I've sent emails to photographers and I never actually got a reply. Arguments have ensued on their forums about this where others have done the same thing and they afterwards maintain that they indeed fulfilled the terms of use by notifying the photographer. If they fail to respond, it's not your problem, etcetera. I just got sick of the whole thing and have since stopped using them. I think morguefiles is a much better option for truly free (and I mean hassle-free) stock photography.
