Well, for my website, I ll probably end up using one of these..

I just want to make up my mind on this..

PhpBB has a great lot of mods, themes and also more subscribers.

SMF on the other hand, looks nice and the operation is smooth as well..

I just feel that phpBB looks a little plain when compared to SMF.
But I am impressed by the subscriber base of phpbb as well as the support etc

What do you think is best and why>?

What exactly is the difference in performance/functionality between these two?

phpbb is the only one i've used (but not installed myself), its GNU licensed so that's usually a good sign.

SMF is freeware which could mean it could cost money someday to the user if they want to upgrade should SMF decide to start charging.

SMF definately. Although phpBB has a lot of good mods, it's the only forum system I ever needed mods for.

SMF!! i wont even compare it with phpbb.. its far better and performs better too... and most importantly, the admin interface is pretty easy to understand unlike phpbb... ill go for it without second thoughts..

I prefer using SMF because its interface is clean and the admin area is easy to understand. Though I know phpBB has lot more features than SMF. Maybe I will try to use phpBB someday.

tried both I got back to phpBB with CH2
you can get Pack without need to mod http://ptifo.clanmckeen.com

phpbb3 > SMF > phpbb2
A lot of the features in version 3 are vastly improved and many of the things you needed mods for in version 2 are not needed in version 3.

Only problem is it's beta quality. Once it's stable go for it.

I use PhpBB because PhpBB has a great lot of mods, themes. Easy to use but slow.

Actually the latest beta versions are very stable. Many of the known bugs got squashed in the first and second beta stages...after that the numbers have been very low. Now, I'm not advocating use in a live environment, if only because up until recently there wasn't any upgrade path between the betas and since it's not in RC mode yet the software may undergo major schema or another drastic change, such as the change in BBcode formating from beta 1 to beta 2, and the decision to implement full UTF-8 support in beta 3.

^ Secretly a phpBB3 dev?

I think so. Wink

Don't even try phpBB3 untill phpBB group finish working on the third version updates. For now phpBB3 contains too many bugs.

Untrue, actually. They release the beta packages so that people can test them (in a non-live environment). They are fully functioning bulletin board software packages; there are very few noticeable bugs.

SMF proved to be the most logical choice for me. The main reason is the mod known as TinyPortal. This is a very basic CMS which should allow officers of my forum to help with article submission, downloads... crap like that. SMF is made to work with mods very easily, and there are also very reliable bridges made to work with joomla and momba which I have found very useful in past projects. Also, SMF has a great look, and although it is more difficult to skin that PHPBB, the outcome is worth it.

SMF
Good usermanagement
Looks nicer ( then phpBB standerd silver template)

PhpBB

There's actually a lot more of such softwares available:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software

I have used phpBB, SMF, punBB, NavBoard and XMB. If I would have to choose between phpBB and SMF it would be SMF, because I think it works a lot simpler and is quite lightweight also.
Marston
^ SMF is anything but lightweight in my opinion. SMF is borderline bloatware (too many features).
Arnie
I must've been mistaken with another forum then. Smile To my feeling phpBB has always been the most heavy software around (apart from IPB and vBulletin of course) but that's probably wrong...
{name here}
If you want lightweight, but still a fully featured then try XMB - its only about a megabyte or two but you get just about as much as phpBB. YaBB is just as light, and you get more features than phpBB2(but you don't have the MySQL database and it's written in Perl).

As for phpBB vs. SMF being bloatware, my cPanelX Fantastico at another host tells me phpBB2 is 14 MB. SMF is 19 MB, but I'm assuming that most of that extra 4 MB is of the two extra themes that come with it. In conclusion, both are bloatware.

i use a PHPBB and i well know it but i never use a SMF so i cant tell who is better.

i preferd PHPBB to new users because is simpled and if you dont know a PHP you can create you theme and PHPBB have a lot of mods and other thing
Grom
SMF only! I use phpBB and SMF and I choose SMF. Why? Because SMF is better. It's simillar to IPB, have good-looking themes, easy mod install, easy theme install, autoupdate etc. PhpBB have a lot of mods only.

phpbb is all of us forum use, and it can have many styles and factions. I do not use phpbb, i use discuz. You can find the results on the search server.

Last year I've tried alot of forum software, I found SMF the best.
I use a SMF forum as a communication channel for a small project I'm working on with a few people. SMF was he best choice for me cause it has al the functionality I needed, so I don't need to install mods (makes updates easier) and the looks are good.
Maybe it has too many features, but I don't have the idea thats is slowing down the forum. Sometimes the forum seems slow but thats due the server 2 restarts.
Maybe the best way to figure out wich forum software to use is to try them all out in an test setting separate from your site in an temprary map, that way you can explore the possibilities and see how well it's running on your host.

I think PhpBB is the best forum software. It is safety than other. Also, many websites use phpbb for their forum too. My friend also use phpbb for his forum of the own website.

FALSE. PhpBB is probably the most hole ridden piece of web software out there because it is popular. I have never used a forum system that allows so many spambots registering - 500 totaling on one site I had phpBB on, and that's with the URL CAPTCHA.

SMF can be upgraded easily and have better support. Phpbb have lots of security holes and if you have installed mods on it you have to redo them all when you upgrade so people hesitate upgrading and are mostly attacked.

I like the forums of SMF, but I hated their Admin CP. I think it's because I'm so used to the phpbb one, but their CP was proablly the only thing I didn't like about it. I think I will give invision a shot before going to phpbb.

I've never used SMF, and I've only recently looked into it, so I can't say if it is better or worse, but what I can tell you, is why I like PHPbb.

I am really into coding by hand, and learning new ways to do things. One reason why I like PHPbb is that I can learn as I mod. My understanding of correlations between code structure and output have increased by simply going into PHPbb files, and moving code around, taking parts out that I don't like, and even adding my own content. I have installed many mods on my forum, and even customized the mods myself in order to achieve the effect I want.

The same goes for styles too, by creating my own styles, I've learned quite a bit about CSS, even after I thought I was done learning (silly me).

In summary, I like PHPbb because the customizability is figuratively endless, which enables my learning.

SMF has better support that phpbb. I've been using it for the past year and its very easy to upgrade. It has a lot of mods and all the functionality that i need. And it will always be free. Its very easy to integrate SMF with Joomla, but i have opted to use TinyPortal since its creator is also part of the devteam of SMF.
Aimewitue
i just fall in love with the SMF board script! i use PHPBB in the past & for me SMF is better
