i 'm sure that most of people are familiar with the movie Pirates of Caribbean. As i like Jonnny Deep ,he acted very well.He also stared in the Sleepy Hollow (1999) well.
who likes Johnny Deep?
I think Johnny Depp is a good, sorry first-class, actor who is awful at choosing roles for his wonderful talents.
His first credited movie was A nightmare on Elm Street I believe and in my opinion this was one of the most influential movies he has been in, this has to say something for the lack of growth in his acting stature.
He seems to have chosen titles so poorly that I now avoid his movies, not because he is bad but the movie probably will be.
The Ninth gate was quite an acceptable role and showcased his talents quite well, in a somewhat stunted way.
I did enjoy Sleepy Hollow and loved him in the first Pirates of the Caribbean playing funny man to Orlando Bloom’s straight man act. But other than these movies the cupboard is bare.
Films like the highly forgettable Secret Window, Don Juan DeMarco and the surreal excursions with Edward Scissor Hands, Ed Wood and to an extent Sleep Hollow, makes his resume' far from the A-list masterpiece his talents deserve.
I feel an injustice would be done if I did not repeat the fact that I rate Johnny Depp among the best Hollywood has to offer, its just his choice of roles has made his movies the ones I tend to avoid.

Meh, he's okay. Sometimes he's right on perfect, sometimes he's just not that great. Maybe it has to do with his film selection choices, maybe not.
he's dead sexy
He is a fantastic actor, who always excels in whatever role he takes. He's definitely my favourite actor.
He's brilliant in the Pirates of the Carribean films, but equally as good in "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Sleepy Hollow", "Donnie Brasco" and "From Hell", among many others.

I agree with you.

OMG! Poor role choices? IMHO, he has almost always picked great roles. Not typical hero roles, but something that is a little off, a little bit of a stretch, a little fun. While I may not always like the movies, I always enjoy watching what he does with the character (with the possible exception of the second Pirates flick).
Fear and Loathing, WEGG, Arizona Dream, Ninth gate, Edward Scissorhands....I love him in all of them. Not many US actors today actually ACT. They just play themselves in a role and we've come to accept that.

He is one of my favorite actor! I really love his role in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and in Pirates of the Carribean.. In his different movie, he palys in different roles, its like you can never see him twice in the same personality..
I like Jonny Depp, he is the most sexy actor after Phoneix.
johnny deep was that his porn name before becoming an A-list actor?? j/k as for all the heart throb celebrity actors out there depp is one of the better ones (in my opinion) at developing and selling the character that he is playing. his roles tend to be ones that reflect characteristics that are not mainstream. He is not afraid to delve into the deeper side of the psyche and serve it to the public in such a way that is pleasant, not frightening to watch. Edward Scissorhands is a great example, along with the character of capt. sparrow. much more than just a sex symbol to sell movies such as with decaprio.
I like Johny! He is one of my favourite actors! He's really very talanted! And practically all his roles were very success!
I don't know another actor who is able to play like Depp!
And in my opinion Jack Sparrow is his best role!

I'd have to say he's probably my favorite actor. I've quite enjoyed most of the movies I've seen him in, and I think that he does a great job no matter what character he chooses to play. I love him as Jack Sparrow, but I can't imagine anyone else pulling off Edward Scissorhands or Inspector Abberline... and he was great in Sleepy Hollow too.
Then again, I tend to gravitate toward weird movies...

Who doesn't like Mr. Depp.
He's an awesome actor. I personally first fell in love with him when he was on a television show called 21 Jump Street. Anyone remember that? He does have his ups and downs though but I think its more of the choice of movies than his acting.
I agree he is one of the few american actors that actually act.

Nightmare on Elm St.. Legendary (also nice to see him cameo in the below par "Elm St 6" movie after making it "big").
His most memorable role could easily be Edward Scissorhands, and maybe his best performance.
Some weak films he has been in recently could have destroyed his career (ok, not so DRASTIC), but his acting and charisma turned below par films in to box office hits.
Keep up the good work, Depp bloke - though you'll never read this, I adore you. a bit.

Hobo, I agree with you COMPLETELY. JD picks roles and directors that would not be deemed commercially viable or possibly even sensible for any actor wanting to achieve and maintain A List status. Fortunately for all true film fans, that is a deliberate choice on his part (until this Pirates II and III debacle. But I forgive him always.) As has been often said, he is a character actor with a leading man's face.
That you know Arizona Dream tells me you are a JD connoisseur (I like to think of myself as one too). Have you seen him in Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man? 1996, I think. Black & white, highly experimental and philosophical -- nay, poetic.
Check it out JD fans and let us know what you think on this thread.
I love Johnny Depp, I think he's great in Tim Burton movies he's like the pinch of salt needed lol, plus he's good looking so that's a plus
but I think he is a great actor my favorite anyway ^-^
... great performance on "Sleepy Hollow". Impressive!
I'm pretty sure 99% of heterosexual females like Johnny Depp. Apart from being a pretty damn good actor and very convincing, he has this "allure". Like, just the way that he is so ridiculously sexy and kind of mysterious. Johnny Depp is Johnny Depp, I guess.
He is also the only one who can pull off the eyeliner and dirty pirate look. And he was brilliant in Edward Scissorhands! =D

I have always liked Johnny Depp. I would agree with an earlier poster that he has not made the best choices in movies. A couple of my favorites were "What's eating Gilbert Grape", "Benny and Joon", "Pirates of the Caribbean" and believe it or not "21 Jump Street".
ah.. our favourite Jack Spearow..................
cant wait for the 3rd movie........................

hehehe. Yep. And 99% of gay males. And once, I came across a website "Lesbians for Johnny Depp." Can't find it now, though.
So I guess you could say he has universal appeal.
everyone loves the depp
Yeah I like him. He's a great actor. I enjoyed both of the Pirate movies and I can't wait for the third one. I think the third one is coming out this year.
I like him. He's one of most talented actors in Hollywod. Period
johnny depp is indeed one of the most talented and adaptable actors hollywood has to offer. His diverse roll selections might strike to some people but i just see it as variations. Unlike most other hollywood "stars", each new movie of his has something different. Each movie has a new johnny depp and is definately worth watching.
I think every female should love that sexy guy!
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory (2005)
Secret Window (2004)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Cry-Baby (1989)
21, Jump Street (TV series) (1987-90)
These are the ones I recall seeing him in and I think he does a great character....
To me he is one of the few actors that can just fit himself into most any character...
And for that....I love his work!!!

I can't believe nobody mentioned "Nick of Time" where he played opposite Christopher Walken. That was definitely a showcase of his talents.
has any of you seen his earlier movies...
hes hell funny in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"
and hes good in Blow as well

i like his role in the POTC series.
I hear he had turned down lead roles in the movies Titanic, Matrix, Speed. Not to mention other roles in movies like The Thin Red Line, Pulp Fiction,Signs, superman returns, mars attacks
Man how can anyone do that..?

His roles are very unique! very different from others. In the film Sleepy Hollow he roles a man very weird:D
In Pirates of caribbean also, his role is ver strange. Look on others; like Charly and Chocolate Factory, Finding Neverland, Donnie Brasco etc.
I like his talent.

Whooooo, good topic!
I like John!
Especially as Jack Sparrow

He is such a fine actor!!! Two-thumbs up!
I think Johnny Depp is a very, very over-rated actor. I would say, that in my opinion, the Pirates Of The Carribean films are among the worst films of all time. I thought Depp's character was incredibly annoying, and the films were just over-expensive rubbish, that had hardly anything pirate-like in them.
The score by Hans Zimmer was god-awful as well.

I like Johnny Depp is hands down the best actor on the screen currently. His wide choice of films is evidence that he can portray anything. Think about the difference between Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Astronauts Wife. Or watch him in the short thriller Nick of Time. True, his movies are not always mainstream, but I think that talks of his overwhelming sense of the art, and not his lack of "A-List Movies".
It can also be said that his movies are not always the greatest. This is true, as From Hell. in my opinion, was not the greatest movie, but Johnny Depp still put forth one hell of a performance. It is a pleasure to watch him in everything he does.

BLOW! He was awesome in blow. Good of you to mention, because i had completely forgotten he was in that one too.
Did anyone see him in Once upon a time in Mexico? Such a deliceous role, with the legendary line: "Are you a Mexcian .... or a Mexican't ?!" Laughed my ass off
He's not all fun and games either. Anyone seen 'Finding Neverland'? Just to prove he can do that too.
Johnny Depp, the crazy pirate, the tormented writer, the troubled zombie, the excentric chocolate tycoon, the undercover FBI agent, .... Not many actors have such a diverse resume.

I'm glad someone mentioned the movie Dead Man. I think that is my favorite movie of his (along with Ed Wood). Most of the popular films are disposable. Wasn't a huge fan of either Pirates movie or Fear and Loathing (although Benicio is in it, it's still a bunch of garbage). Secret Window was dumb also.
A few others he was in that were good but not great (in my opionion) are From Hell, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, Blow and Edward Scissorhands.
