Online Gaming for Complete Idiots (well ok, for me)

Captain Fertile
My friend and I are based in the UK and we would love to be able to play online games against each other when we are on our own PCs.

Whether it be a board game like Scrabble or Monopoly or some kind of exciting first person shooter or role-playing game we know there may not be any choice.

The point is we have no idea what software we need and whether it is possible to play such games online for free or for a very small cost.

It would be best if we can play just against each other but failing this playing against the world and being able to keep a track on each other would be good I guess.

Also, we don’t have super games machines so it would have to be an older or lower spec game that we play.

Are there games like this online or would be have to purchase the CDs (one each) to be able to play – if such games exist?

I’m really sorry to be so green about this but we really need to know the fundamentals so don’t worry about offending me, you cannot aim any descriptions or suggestions at too low a level, chances are I will have to ask you to elaborate anyway – yes we are that dumb about such things.

Many thanks to anyone willing to try and help with suggestions and information.

I'm not just asking for online games available but how we actually go about setting them up to be able to play just between ourselves - hence this new thread.

Runescape is a pretty good one. The only complaint I hear about that really is that the graphics are bad. Oh well. In my opinion, the gameplay makes up for it. I have been playing that for over a year.

I haven't played eventide, but I heard that it a great game.

Another one you may want to try is Fly for fun

That is pretty cool too.

The only complaint about RS is the graphics?! I've played text based MUDs that are much more fun than RS. It's full of twelve year old kids following you around calling you a scammer because you won't give them 5gp to go the gate by lumbridge. Jeese.

That list up there of free games is pretty damn sweet. Kudos for that.

If you're hardcore into role-playing and community togetherness, then check out some MUDs. Warning: they're all text based. A good one to check out is Medevia or Ardwulf. Those are the two I play regularily.

You get that type of thing in just about every RPG you play. There are always people looking for an easy way out. That is what the ignore feature is for.
In fact, just about any game is filled with that kind of stuff.
Halo 2 on Xbox live is filled with little annoying 12 year olds.
Outwar (Text mmorpg) you get the same thing once you get good enough.

While I would like to thank you for the great list of games I have only visited one game you recommend and that is Runescape.

BUT - YOU HAVE ROBBED ME OF A NIGHT OF MY LIFE!!!!!!!

It was great, I don't mind the 'low end' graphics, it just means I can play okay on my low end PC. I really enjoyed it. It was simply to get into, it worked well on my PC and it was easy and fun to play.

Thank you so much for that, my wife does not agree however, she didn't see me all night when I played. Very Happy

I can't wait to take my time and try the other games you mentioned but even if the rest are pants RuneScape os lots of fun.

There are also browserbased games you can play with your friend. (free and you only need internet and a simple browser)

I myself play Utopia(medieval fantasy game) http://games.swirve.com/Utopia
I also played Travian(Romans, Gauls, Germans) http://www.travian.com
Or you can try Hattrick(Football sim) www.hattrick.org

But they have no graphics, only text and lots of numbers.
Utopia: you can't play with your friend in the same group as you are randomly assigned to a Kingdom, but travian allows you to form alliances and thus play together and have some fun. OR you can go head to head against each other Both games are extremely fun but do take some time to get started in.

I don't know if you are into that at all, but you can look at them. And best thing is they don't take much time to play on a daily basis. Althoug I should warn you that if you like the games, they are very addictive.

Used to play Utopia as well for a couple of years before I got tired of it and got myself WoW... But it's really a great game, I loved it. And, while you are randomly assigned, at an end of an "Age", you can stay with your team - and sometimes, if someone quits, and is nice enough, you can get their account into the "Kingdom pool", and give it to a friend. So it's not impossible to form a team that you really want to have.

Ahh, old memories! Yeah, I had a long period of Utopia playing (3 years actually). As you say you could pass on accounts, but if you got to the top kingdoms in the game you could get deleted when they checked the IP addresses :S

Thanks to you all for the great tips and ideas. I should have plenty to check out and keep me busy for quite a while to come.

It seems there is a whole world out there I didn't know existed.

I appreciate you all taking the time to list the games and give me your personal accounts of them, this makes finding the right games much easier.

Much appreciated and if I can ever help you guys let me know.
