I have attempted to use multiple FTP programs and for some reaseon
when I connect it either won't connect or it is slow and stops refreshing.
I have tried many different settings but no luck.
Please help,
picklebreath
This mightn't help, but this happened to me. I waited a while and then just typed ftp@whatever.frih.net into Internet Explorer (God save me).
Doesnšt work this
I recommend using FileZilla. It's the best FTP program in my opinion.
To make FileZilla work, go to: File (top left corner) ----> Site Manager (or Ctrl+S) then make a new folder in there, or edit and exisitng one. Click on the "Advanced" button and bubble in "Active Mode." Then press "OK" then when you're back to the main site management window, click "Save and Exit" or "Connect." (Either one works, cause it'll change the settings.)
What Server are you on? Here, this might help you:

Make sure you choose Active mode (like SpellcasterDX said). Passive mode doesn't work on server 2 (it's due to the type of FTP server being used, I think)

EDIT: server 2 ftp is down at 7:49 -CST
reason is: Down - 110 - Connection timed out
Ok. I'm having the same problem. Few weeks ago, I'm using FileZilla client. Now, using the same client, using same credentials, I can't login.

You're using Passive mode. Switch to Active mode instead.

I think you're ussing Passive mode. Use active mode, as I said above.
Okay. I switched to Active. Now I'm getting this error

What does unable to build data connection mean? It isn't my internet connection since I was able to login.

That's strange... I've always used Passive mode when using FTP and its always worked for me in the past...
It's now stopped working with Passive mode, and when it can't connect, it changes over to Active mode... It's never needed to do this before so something on the server must have been changed!

I am having the same problem. It will connect in active mode but it is really slow. Did something change on server 2? This is really frustrating!!!!!!!

I too used Passive mode right till sometime ago..
It used to work great..
I still wonder what caused this sudden change in server 2.
If the problem is with the type of FTP, i dont think we should have been able to connect using passive mode earlier as well.
Or if Bondings had changed something recently..
Im having the same problem.
Hey you don't need to post and say stuff like "Yeah I have the same problem." or any or the comments saying it doesn't work.
Post if you have help about it or info about fixing it to keep spam away.
Oh and I have been trying to connect with active mode but it connects but won't pull up the directory. Thats the problem.
Im sorry man i've accidently clicked the submit button.
Anyway, I tried it again. and it worked this time. I followed what SpellcasterDX said.
Thanks again.

Yes, I used to use passive mode, too. But one day I connected as usual, and what do you know? Passive mode stopped working. So, after a little thought, I switched to active mode and it worked!

@SpellcasterDX, I'm having this same problem with picklebreath. I've been trying to connect using either passive or active, but the directory won't list.
I found a fix to my problem, this might help. I found that I was using a bookmarked setting and when I changed just the prefrences for the ftp client it wasn't changing the settings for the bookmark. So I had to open the settings for the bookmark and change it to an active connection. The ftp client that I am using is cyberduck. I am still unable to grt a good connection with Fireftp.
Ehh ... same problem here...
TotalCommander - FileZilla - doesn't mather :/
Active or Pasive - this same - can't connect...
And... a month (?) ago there was no problem for me to connect via TotalCMD and Pasive... what's going on?
For now, the only posibility to edit or send files is File Manager via Direct Admin :/
Someone Fix it plz...

Hey, I too used to be using the Passive Mode in SmartFTP. However, recently, it seemed to refuse data connection, tho I managed to successfully log in, which means I cannot see the files and everything. At first I thought that it was my router that was causing the problem, but later I found out that many frihosters are having this problem too. It will only work when Smartftp made an auto failover, converting into ActiveFTP. I think ActiveFTP is affected by firewalls, read it somewhere, so mebbe those still wif problems with Active connections can try disabling firewall first? But why the sudden dropping of support for PassiveFTP on Server 2?
I have changing all sorts of preferences and options on Filezilla and I have come up with one thing.
Use active mode and hope it connects.
For some reason I can only connect around 5:00 p.m. CST
I don't always connect so its a game of chance so you may or may not connect.
And if you do the same goes for pulling up the directory.
Get lucky and it may work, otherwise you're stuck.
