Come Canadians, come one, come all!

What do you all think about Stephen Harper's bold move to declare Quebec a "nation within Canada"? Personally, I don't think it was really necessary, but a sound political move to try to secure some votes in Quebec.

This is just going to stir up all the Québécois seperatists and hopefully, we won't have to deal with a repeat of what happened last time people actually started taking this seriously. My personal opinion is that for the most part, the Québécois don't even really know why they want to seperate, nor do they realize the extent of the economic or political backlash this would cause, hurting not only Canada, but Quebec as well.

What do you think? Anyone hailing from Quebec here? I know this is kind of old news, but I would still love to hear your side of the argument.

well, i dont think Quebec should be their OWN country. u see, if they do, most likely, afetr a while, maybe a few years or even months, Canada and/or America and/or Europe will invade Quebec and take it back...

I somehow doubt that Quebec, if it were to become a country, would be invaded. We aren't, after all, living in the 1100's. Smile

I'm from Montreal, Quebec.

And I was born here and I face this stupid question of seperation all the time.
It is basically a small percentage of the population who mass the rest of the population into believing that separation is the solution to keeping there identity. I really hate this crap they keep on talking about, I'm a Quebecer I speak English and French, I live in Montreal, which is part of Canada. Quebec is just a province.....I hate this notion of a separate nation within a unified country it's all crap.....

Quote:
The 1995 Quebec referendum was the second, nearly identical referendum in the Canadian province of Quebec (see 1980 Quebec referendum) that put to public vote the political roles of Quebec and Canada, whether Quebec should secede from Canada and become an independent state. One minor difference was that whereas the first vote was on a proposal to negotiate something termed 'sovereignty-association', the second one was on 'sovereignty' along with an optional partnership offer.

The referendum took place in Quebec on October 30, 1995, and the motion to pursue Quebec's independence was defeated by an extremely small margin, 50.58% "No" to 49.42% "Yes".

%49.42 is not a small value.
at this time as i know there is no big problems in canada and quebec.
if some problems start , this ratio can be increase.

At one point in the past 50 years or so (not exactly sure when, I wasn't born yet) Canada and Quebec came within a hair of seperating. I'm just hoping that the Bloc wasn't given the spark that they need to bring this back to the fore of Canadian politics.
