I'd just like to post some free programs that I find extremely useful.
- Filezilla (filezilla.sourceforge.net)
very convenient FTP client, open source
- notepad++
A great text editor for editing all kinds of code. Supports syntax highlighting for html, css, php and many more. Extremely useful.
- Multiple Image Resizer .NET (www.multipleimageresizer.net)
useful for editing a lot of pictures at once (bulk editing).
features resizing, reducing quality, adding border, captions.
- AscToTab (http://www.jafsoft.com/asctotab/?home&p=AscToTab)
converts text files in to html tables, with very little formatting. The tables are then ready for editing with css. Very useful if you write your page in html and you have a table that you want to convert into html code.
What-you-see-is-what-you-get programs do a bad job of this, since they produce complex html code that is unsuitable for html editing
- Rename It (https://sourceforge.net/projects/renameit/)
useful for renaming multiple files. Can save A LOT of time.
I mainly use it to rename images.
All right. I think that's it.
Feel free to add to the list. Please post only freeware or open source software.
btw, I am looking for a good color tool that displays hex code of colors. Any ideas?
Thanks a lot! the one I found very useful is the Text to HTML converter Program. Thats totally awesome thanks dude!
I enjoy Total Commander and InfranView to do all of the tasks mentioned above. Total Commander is not free, but the shareware version does not expire.

When you use Firefox (and I think you should, as it is much more versatile than anything Microsoft), you could install the Colorzilla extension.
It will allow you to hover over a colour and get the hex value displayed instantly.
In the same line: get the MeasureIt extension too: it will allow you to determine the size of anything shown in your browser.
Of course, you also need the web developer toolbar for Firefox: check the site of the man who has created this valuable tool here.

FireFox has some really cool extensions for web design.
Along with Colorzilla, Web Developer and Firebug are awesome.
For a free editor- well, take your pick- HTML Kit, NVU, HTML Beauty..... the list goes on and on.
Anybody know of a good & EASY to use e-learning open source or freeware program? I am looking for one I can use in my class. I am trying to put my curriculum on an class intranet site.
Thanks
I think that notetab is available for free. I find it to be an amazing text editor...the tabbing makes it all worthwhile, and it makes it easy to coordinate pages.
Xubuntu Linux
All the versions of Ubuntu Linux are good, but Xubuntu is my favorite (well until they come out with Gobuntu's stable release.)
Might I also suggest Kwrite it is the best editor I could ask for when editing code, has syntax highlighting for a bunch of different languages, including Perl, php, HTML, C, AWK, and 118 others.
Also Audacity, which is an opensource Sound editing application. With support for wav, ogg, and mp3.
I highly recomend Gparted, which is a GNOME frontend for the parted program. Support for 13 different partition types, including FAT, NTFS, and ext3.
Then there is of course Open Office an open source office suit. Which has a word processor, database editor, spreadsheet maker, presentation software, and a neat program for formating math.
My favorite out of all of these programs though is the GIMP which is the GNU Image Manipulation Project. The finest in image creation/editing. Many features and has a plugin system for adding more. The windows version of the GIMP can be downloaded here since there site is a pain to navigate. To run the GIMP you also need GTK+2 which can be downloaded here.
Enjoy.

If I'm not mistaken, you can save Excel files in CVS-format (or some text other format) which you can import in MySQL. But you still need to make the table-structures yourself.
oh wat a great free softwares.. thanks for the free gifts and informations
AbiWord can take a text document and turn it into an HTML document. it can be found Here.
personally i love notepad++ its one of the best and simplest text editors out there and its hard to find something that works better. being able to search for text in different files at the same time is a great way to manage corrections for websites. i found Firebug recently and i dont know if there is something that is more powerful but i didnt find anything better so far. all the things you expect in a debugger and its free so thats great.
i was wondering is there anything like this for php? without error messages that mean anything its hard to debug. i also have to be online to work on the code otherwise i dont have a way of running the code. also i'm looking for an ftp client that i can keep on my usb key thats just an exe and doesnt need to be installed.
Yeah I thought this too. I think notepad has all the features you need.
A linux version of this wonderful program?
Pixia if your into art and can't afford photoshop or photoimpact
Sandboxie is good too if you don't want virus or spyware going onto your computer.
Sandboxie prevents anything from going out of the box. Once you close out the window everything is gone.

What type of animation do you want to do? If it is for the web, you can use Flash ( adobe) it is expensive but I know there are some open source or freeware types out there. I will keep my eyes open. I am looking for one too. I have an old version of flash and am using that.
I think I have seen some animated gif creaters but I don't know what the size limitations are. Do you want to animate banners or just some buttons etc.?
For making animated gifs One can use the GIMP You just put each frame in a layer and when you save tell it you need to have it saved as an animation.
I did not know that one. I am just learning gimp too. I like that one. is there a way to do that and make it any shape but a rectangle??
I am also interressed whith the GIMP;
