Do you need to be living near each other to be best friends?

I am very good friends with a guy who lives in London, which is about an hour and half drive from where I live. It takes up to 2 and a half hours on public transport.

Evn though we live quite far from each other he's still one of my best friends and we talk almost every day on MSN.

What are your opinions; do you have to live near each other to be best friends?
I don't think that's neccessarily true.

I have friend who i have never met, but i'm looking for meeting her. But there is a problem, she lives on the other side of my our country (about 6 hours by bus) and my second good friend lives about 45 mins by train.

There's no problem with having friends that live far away.
I mean, as long as you know you're talking to person you think you are.

There's other examples like, if your best friend moved away, but you still keep in touch with them. Or if you go meet them in places every now and then.

I think it's harder. Long distance relationships are always harder. When someone lives where you do, see the people you do, it's easier for them to understand. That's how I feel anyways. Besides, people closer tend to be more accessible, and easier to get to in random emergencies.
