Ruby On Rails?

Hi, im planning to develop an project management application, which mostly will be administered thru web browser, but some 'regular' (gtk?) progams will work with it too (i'll have to write this program too )

i have written several extranet projects in php and mysql, but php isn't great fo g developing gtk. and i'd like to try writing an application with .. and this is the question. One of my friends proposed python , but i recenly discovred ruby ( with rail framework) and i'm excited with this language.

Anybody has experiences with python / ruby ?

i don't know much about project management, but as for ruby and python, python is a great language i use a lot, ruby seems to have a stronger theoretical foundation but it seems less people are using it than python ( at least it seems so to me )
but what i'd realy like to say is about ruby on rails, it must be good cos lots of people are talking about it, but have you seen their web-site? http://www.rubyonrails.org/ if they're so good, how come their site looks sooo bad Smile

one of the things i miss when i try python (or ruby) is
http://php.net/function_name , where i can read how to use it , how not to use it and read great examples of use provided by the community. Do you similar place about python?
http://wiki.python.org/moin/ and http://docs.python.org/lib/lib.html is helpful but not as easy to read as php.net. Do you know any interesting places about python ? or ruby (other than official websites)

that's a great php site, i don't use any particular site for programming info, i just use two O'Reilly books, Programming Python by Mark Lutz and Python Standard Library by Fredrik Lundh, both are top people in python development. And if you want help from guido himself try poking around in the idlelib source that ships with python Smile

btw i'm curious to know, does ruby on rails do the same kind of thing with ruby that zope does with python, or are they very obviously different and this a stupid question Shocked

Both RoR(Ruby) and Django(python) are very developer friendly and nice presentable framework with less or no efforts. RoR is still facing a strong criticism on maintainability while Django is facing load issues. Remember Migrating to new framework doesnt mean that software quality will be better. Lastly, you can do things in PHP, Rail or Django its how you do matters.

But writing apps with frameworks makes you must learn some conventions. Knowing good conventions makes you better programmer, your code is more readable by others i think it;s important
