for ids the snort is the best, there extra software that goes with the snort with grafical enviroment to make it easy for instalation and manipulation...
As for the firewall the zonealarm it is good a free edition and easy installation....

For firewalls, you will want to check out netfilter/iptables. I setup a basic firewall rules generator here:
iptables rule generator - its currently broken but even the form might help you.
Snort is good. It will alert you to the type of suspicious network activity on your network interfaces.
However, I strongly recommend checking out fail2ban. Its a more proactive brute force deflector that works with iptables to drop packets from repetitive dictionary attacks.
