I live in Stockholm, Sweden and some of our trains are thirty years old. They are, however, gradually phasing in newer , quieter trains. How old are thw commuter trains where you live?

here in germany its a real mix.... there are a few 15-20 year old trains, but most of them are new...ALL the ICE's are spanking new and it makes travelling in them a real joy (assuming you get a seat that it...most of the time they are full...especially on weekends when everyone goes home!)...they are quite expensive though...regional trains are for the most part, averagely old (whatever that's supposed to mean lol)...

local transport trains are mostly fancy new ones

Here in Columbus, they are so new that you can only see them in artist renderings Smile In other words, they don't exist. They keep talking about a light rail system, but I don't see it happening in my life time.

@Orno - I spent a few months in Stuttgart (well, Waiblingen, really) and I thought the locals there (the S-bahn and U-bahn) were older, but in pretty good shape. I guess I really have nothing to compare them to, but they did the job, were clean and comfortable for short hops. The ICE was better though, if we were heading out of town.

Really there only in the city. But i think the ones we have are really nice. There clean and up to date. We dont' have any bullet trains that i know of at the moment though. But i'm in the suburbs so i dont' use the train that much. Most of my communting is through a car or my bike.

Are the oldest in the subway only 30 years old? They look rather medival Wink
The ones going out from stockholm to one of the suburbs is for sure way older than that... a guess would be 40-50 years.

Here in St. Louis, Missouri we have a very new rail system called MetroLink. It is a vast improvement over our prior bus-only system, but it's still VERY FAR from being even close to a replacement for cars.

Now if you live in the city and work in the city, you can get fairly reliable transportation, but if you need to get to the suburbs, unless you live/work off of one of the four major roads, you're pretty much SOL.

What the metrolink IS very capable of is reducing traffic into/outside of the downtown area. You simply drive your car to a metrolink station, then take a train right into downtown. Pretty handy for events/sports/etc... but a bit of an inconvenience for everyday commuting, although I'm probably a tad biased being I've had a car since I was old enough to legally drive.

Almost nonexistent. we don't have a great transportation system in Atlanta. Some of the metro counties have their own bus systems going to the rail lines or even into the city. but not made to be real public. some you have to pre-order passes for the buses. I think they did it so vagrants can't just get on one and come all the way to the suburbs. Some of the counties have fought letting the Marta rail and Bus system in, and one of the reasons is the people are afraid of the access it give vagrants to come to these new areas to pan handle and what not.
The Marta system is not very good. but it gets people where they need to be in the city. Slowly but surely the surrounding counties are building their own system to work with it though. I assume eventually they may just join together and become one transit system. Hopefully then I won't have to drive to work.

CityRail here in New South Wales is 50-50. Some days it runs on time, others they are painfully slow. Some of the carriages are that old it's not funny, but they're gradually being phased in.
