Is there a way to make Civ IV interesting?

I like the Civilzation series of games - Civ II and III were my favorite games ever. I recently tried Civ IV, but for some reason despite the fancy graphics and other new aspects, I find it really boring. It's possible I'm just doing something wrong - maybe I don't even know about the new features that make it interesting.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to spice Civ IV up a little? What do you do to make the game interesting?

What don't you like about the game? I never played Civ III but from what I've heard all they did was take that engine, add some features and fix whatever was broken or redundant from it.
