fourth dimension other than time........

rooparam
i had just read in a mathematics book about zero volume solid and in it's explanation author explains it via fourth dimension of space but that was not "time" dimension................but i didnot understand it well.............so can i get some help from u guys?
Indi
You can have an infinite number of spatial dimensions, but the human mind cannot think in them (well, most can't anyway). The need for a fourth spatial dimension comes up in string theory, too - in fact, there may be 9-25 spatial dimensions.

If you can't picture a fourth spatial dimension, don't panic. That only means you're on the same boat as 99.99999% of the human race.

But if you want to try, see if you can wrap your head around things like hypercubes:

that's rubbish.. you believe you're picturing a 4th dimension... but you're not, really look better and it's a 3D image. the 4th dimension you find is nothing more than a vector which has coordenates in the three dimensions. the idea of a 4th (physical) dimension is nothing else than a creation of science fiction.

Thats a big assumption. "theres no such thing as a rd dimension" said the two dimensional creature.

I find the concept of extra spatial dimensions perfectly acceptable. I think it's a bit arrogant to assume that the 3 spatial dimensions we can perceive are the only ones that can possibly exist.

Indeed, most modern theories of physics, particularly attempts at unification, start with the assumption of at least a five-dimensional spacetime (four spatial and one temporal - KK theory for example). String theory postulates as many as 10, 11 or 26 dimensions. Science fiction? Hardly.

What they have found is that three dimensions are required for stability of physical systems, like they orbits of planets and so on, so a spacetime of three spatial and one temporal dimension is called privileged.

What they suspect has happened is that when the universe was forming, all spatial dimensions had equal status, but then, because of the lack of stability, all but three folded back in on themselves so tightly that any motion along one of those dimensions takes you where you started. So, theoretically, we move along those higher dimensions all the time, but don't notice it because we never go anywhere. However, strings can vibrate in these extra dimensions because the vibrations are very, very small.

Another theory is that the universe is made up of many three-dimensional spaces, all orthogonal to each other so that we do not observe them. Yet another involves N-branes, which are membranes of various dimensions. Modern physics is very seriously and very broadly considering the possibility of more spatial dimensions.

Another way to think of a fourth dimension, and indeed even more, should you get that far, is right angles.

Try this: Get some straws or whatever to represent straight lines.
Now put two of them together at a right (90 degree) angle. That is two dimensional.
Now put three of them together at right angles (joining at the same place), but do so in a way that none of the straws are parallel. This is three dimensional.
Now put four straws together at right angles to all the others from a central point so that none of them are parallel. In three dimensions, this is impossible, so if you manage to do it, be sure to tell us how.

Generally speaking the fourth dimension is ALWAYS time. It needs to be time in order for stuff like Einstein's equations to be right. That said, there's nothing that says that there are only 4 dimensions. In fact string theory says there are 20-something dimensions.

Have ui read the book Wrapped passage? Its on extra dimentions.

A book on super string is very good 2 understand extra dimentions. its Cosmic Landscape by Leonard Susskind. U should try this.Bye

Guys I thinK U know about String Theory. i need 2 discuss about d total dimentions. so i posted a new topic Sperstring Theory. So...
