Who's played these things? They're usually called MUSHes, or Multi-User Shared Hallucination. And they were the original MMORPG. Text based role playing at it's finest.
I myself have played a couple comic book ones (notably Marvel Xtreme) and quite a few Star Trek ones (Holotrek, Tos TrekMUSE, Redemption).
They take so much time though, time I don't have anymore. But I'm wondering what people think of them!
