I'm not sure whether designer should always have to be different / abstract in thinking, or will be the one who introduce a new design concept and marketing. I believe there are 2 types of ways to think, probably we call it abstract and logic. Someone will think more toward one or the other, but it would be the better ( in my opinion ) to be able to combine the two together. have read somewhere that famous artist, even though they have abstract design, they still have logic inside it. Say for example, to make nature painting. The way to put highlight and shadow, the way to use gradation, the way to use perspective view will still be logical, and the artist put abstarct mind, probably the use of the shape, the choice of the colour, the position. So, in the other word, for me, designer does not aalways necessarily be an abstract thinker
Some of the more celebrated types of art are in fact logical. Even cubism was based on a logical application of seeing all sides of an object at once.
This potentially is off topic but I usually see graphic/web designers as quite inventive creative people. And they always seem to end up in the same places for some reason - on the net I mean. For example I visit a forum regually for IDM fans (music) and they are mostly web designers.
Well can't just about anyone call themselves a web designer? Heck, I have absolutely no formal training in any artistic discipline, but I have a good eye and can figure out a way around Gimp. That doesn't make me a designer, and when I see really well-trained designers do their thing, it's a world apart from some of the amateur crap that is posted all over the web.
No offense to any amateur designers out there but, sheesh, let's be realistic.
