I've been thinking these past few days if life really is fair. I can still remember that our Literature teacher said that life is so unfair. Her mother died, financial problems came and lastly she has a chemothrapy session. But almost all of my classmates said that life is just fair. Somebody said that no matter how rich or poor you are; you have your own cross to cary or shall we say "sufferings". Another classmate of mine said that from the beginning dust we are created and dust we shall return.

For you : Is life fair or unfair?
ocalhoun
Well, unless you believe in karma or some such thing, you almost have to admit that life is unfair.

Also, your poll sucks.
Is life unfair or unfair? yes or no. Which option corresponds to fair which is unfair?

I answered yes, since logically speaking, life is fair or unfair. (It's at least one of those.)

Sorry buddy...it's ...Is life fair?
Indi
i agree with ocalhoun. Your poll sucks. Not only is the question vague, but the answer set doesn't include all the possible answers.

i say neither. But that depends on the fact that "fair", "unfair" and "neither" are three different things. "Neither" includes both "not fair" and "not unfair", which is possible because not everything has to be either fair or unfair.

For something to be fair, the returns you get have to be somewhat proportional to the input you put into it. If i introduce more "good" into the universe than "evil", i should expect to get more "good" than "evil" back.

But not everything has a response that is a function of how much "good" or "evil" you do. Would you define gravity as fair or unfair? Gravity is blind to "good" and "evil"; its effects are the same for "good" people and "evil" people. Sometimes "good" people benefit from gravity, and sometimes "evil" people benefity from gravity. What about the weather? Sometimes it blows fair for the "good" guys and sometimes it blows fair for the "bad" guys. Is it unfair? Or neither fair nor unfair? Is a large stone rolling down a hill fair or unfair? It's not going to roll towards an "evil" person and away from a "good" one, or vice versa. It's going where it's going. Period. Does that make it unfair?

i don't believe the universe has any guiding intelligence, or even any non-intelligent force that is a function of "good" and "evil" (ie, karma). So the universe is a great big, dumb machine that doesn't make value judgements, and doesn't react according to how much "good" or "evil" you do. It just does what it's going to do, just like that great big stone rolling down a hill.

But if you do believe in a guiding intelligence, and if you believe that intelligence has a "plan", then the universe is still neither fair nor unfair. If you can be made to suffer even though you've been "good" for the sake of the greater plan, or if sometimes "evil" people win in order to "test" you - which is what most theologies believe - then what you get out of the universe is still not a function of what you put in. Life is still neither fair nor unfair.

Well, I voted 'no' because I think life is not 100% fair; after life though, may be fair but I'm not sure. Razz

Well, Indi I'll call Neither as Equall. Life is 100% Equall. It gives Bad as much as Good.

The idea is that sometimes so many things which are bad comes one by one and never give you the time to get a breath. But in return you may spend many months with no bad in your life. And so many things which is good comes one by one.

We as humans don't count what good we have and always count what bad happens to us so we always see life as UNFAIR because we never counted what good we got from life.

"If something bad happens to you, look what bad has happened to others to see how fair life is" This is an old saying which I translated letterally from Arabic and there's another one that says: "If you see what happens to other you'll never care about what happens to you".

The universe works for both sides, GOOD and BAD and doesn't judge people and doesn't seperate them but we look as whatever life gives to the bad people is unfair... and whatever bad happens to the good ones is unfair too...

Another thing is what we consider bad or good. Look what a rich man has and what he hasn't. He may have the money but lost the health... and you'll find him saying: " how UNFAIR is this life it gave me money and took the health to entertain myself with this money" and a poor man will say" what's good of health if there's no money to enjoy spending it"... That's what we think and react with life.

Life is EQALL

i think no: the rich get richer, the poor struggle on.

the rich live in luxury more or less, the porr struggle to live, and so it goes on
Jazradem
I voted yes, life is unfair if you look at it from a single persons perspective.

Look at it from a universal point of view and everything balances something else.
TrueFact
No Yantaal... not every rich get richer and not every poor struggles for ever.
For the poor you have so many known examples about poor people who became more rich than what they ever imagined.
For the rich people who became poor there are examples but rare to find a well known example.

Life is balanced asJazradem said for the universal scope and you consider fair for you others find it unfair for them.

Who can tell what's fair for another one and what's not?
