Doesn't this happen like every 4 years?

wowz
Now why is it that I recall just about every 4 years or so I see something like this --

Quote:
A candidate for a county board who appeared in newspaper ads the weekend before the election sailed to victory with 12,000 votes _ despite being dead for a month.

-comcast.net news

I often find myself thinking of a few possible explainations:
1) the people are so ignorant that they don't realize this guy is DEAD even though I'm sure it's on every news station for weeks and during the election
2) people really hate the other guy so much that this is their way of voting for nobody
3) people aren't really paying attention to the ballets and just picking whoevers name happens to appeal to them the most at the time of voting

If the answer was 2 or 3, then why would they even bother to vote? Ok, nix those. So you're trying to tell me that people that care enough to vote, don't care enough to watch the news? Do they even know what these guys are about or do they just go by the color of the sign on their lawn? "I like blue today, I'll vote for Jim", "My favorite color is green, I'm with Joe all the way", "Purple? She must be good people"

Because I mean, really... I'm sure it was annouced on the news, posted places of voting, and even announced several times in the news paper. I fail to see how someone that thinks they know enough about the candidates to vote, can completely avoid news 100%

Or, in some cases, it could be option 4)...

The candidate died recently and it was too close to the election to change the ballot. Even if his name could be removed, another member of his party could not be added to the ballot. Therefore removing his name would essentially give the election to the other candidate(s). Instead, votes are cast for the deceased and then funneled into another candidate.

A similar situation arose in a Florida House race this year. Although Mark Foley did not die, he resigned his seat and withdrew from the race because of the recent scandal. It was too close to the election, according to Florida election law, to change the ballot. Therefore, Foley remained on the ballot and the votes would have gone for a replacement (in this case Joe Negron).

It is always strange when a deceased candidate wins, but that doesn't mean there isn't a logical explanation.

^Also, people often vote along party lines. They may not care at all about the name, as long as there's the proper (dem) or (rep) next to the name.

or if you were John Ashcroft, maybe the dead guy was a better choice (according to the movie Fahrenheit 9/11)

(_) Joe Schmo (dem)
(_) Peter Paul (rep)
(X) Andrew Yost (dead)

Of course it would be the best choice. Just think: no more wars. no more scandals. no more laws. and nobody to object to you not paying your taxes.

Small government!
