Some proprietary software came with the mouse, yes?
Just reconfigure it to use FF's back and forward shortcuts.

While we're at this anyway, does the same work in linux, with my logitech trackball?

The program I can't remember the name from did receive all clicks, whether they were back/forward, cruise control, scroll click and everything else, they just don't do anything.

There are no logitech drivers available for this trackball (wireless optical trackball).

Greetz,
