How about a non-automotive thread here... Who here likes trains? I know I've always been fascinated with them, especially the stuff used in urban environments (subways, elevated trains, streetcars). Am I just weird or are there actually other people like me around?
Railfans?
never really seen the attraction tbh, a train is a train to me - gets me from A to B, and sometimes to C! Unless I owned a train, i couldnt see me taking much interest in them, but i cant see that happening.
Cars on the otherhand, are things that people can and do take pride in, they provide flexibility that a train cant, and they're more fun.
Seriously though, im not dissing it, im curious as to what it is about trains that makes them so appealing to you?

Hmm, I've never really been sure why I like trains, I just always have. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I grew up in an area where there was no good public transit (Atlanta), so when I moved somewhere where there was (Boston) I fell in love.
I live in an area in the US were there is no urban system and Amtrak (US national system) is just a joke. First time I was on a real passenger train( I did hop a fright once, but that is a different story) was in Germany. I loved it.
You do loose the flexability of the car, but for a trip, I would definately consider a train and then rent something (car, bike, etc) at the other end. I love driving, but sitting in a railcar has it's advantages...sleeping, stretching out, reading... all sorts of things.
Of course, in the US that is a dream that I will never see happen. For me to go the 700 miles to DC by Amtrak, I would have to drive 70 miles to the nearest station, be there at 3AM, pay more than an airline ticket and the trip would take longer than driving.
Sort of pointless to even consider.

I live in the UK and was young in the last few years of steam here. I was so fascinated by them then and despite the advent of diesel I am still interested in them. I do collect model trains still, th mostle steam ones. I have a number of quality peserved steam railys close tome including my own city, so thats kewl.
My local railway is als ofering training courses to learn to drive them and this because such people are becoming scarce.

Well I got to say I use to really enjoy the trains until I moved to the UK. I was in Bristol. The one thing that got me while I was in the UK was what I was paying for and no service there were times when I had paid full price and didn't even have a seat. I guess taking the train in Canada is a "romantic" thing. I actually enjoyed taking the bus/coach more for travelling around the UK myself. Yes I know it can break down but so can the train ad at least I always had a seat and depending on the company I was taking and where I was going ie Bristol to London I would only pay a pound a trip.
the joys of the british rail network, it incredibly bad! To be honest you've got a better chance with a bus!
I have to admit I do love the pricing of Megabus although National Express is much more comfy.
