I have (another) (excellent) philosophical question:
Is life worth it?

In this day and age, life is full of theft, muder, disease, war and hatred; which brings me to ask this question:

Is life worth it?

Example situation:
The first 5 years of your life are the best years, you have no responsibilities, no care in the world. Although you probably won't remember these years of your life... Sadly.

Then school starts, and the next 12 years of your life are marred by school and the stress that comes with it.

After that, you move onto university, to learn even MORE skills to prepare you for life. Although, you also have to provide for yourself, get a job and balance education and work.

Once you finish university you get a better job. This job pays more, but now you have less time to spend enjoying life.

Some time during the last few years though, you've found a partner you wish to spend the rest of your life with. Now you want to have children, which you do. They add even more stress to your life, and now you also have to pay for their education and food. You have even LESS time to enjoy life now.

Your children have left home, and you're now retired. NOW you have medical complications to contend with while you're still trying to help your children get through their lifes.

Now you're in the late years of your life. You're friends are dying of illnesses, and you're near death yourself. Then you realize that you've haven't achieved anything great in life, and that you're now too old to do anything great.

Is life REALLY worth it?

Well I don't know about you but with most of my life ahead of me I don't want to be thinking about whether I'm going to look back on my life and go WOW. I'm just going to assume I will! Razz We all must keep a positive outlook to remain sane I think but I'm sure there are many people who will look back and think "I didn't do everything I wanted to do." but those people will have comfort in family etc. I'm pretty sure being a parent is a lot of fun.
ocalhoun
Well, I think the only way life is worth living is if you have a goal or purpose for it. Personally, I want morphological freedom for myself and others, so as long as I can make progress towards that goal, life is worth it. Prove to me, conclusively, that it is impossible, however, and I'd probably become suicidal.
The Conspirator
Yes, given the alternative is nothingness. If your life is hell, that can change where if your dead, you no longer exist and that will not change, you will not come back.
Josso
Yes I guess so, sentience is too under-rated by a lot of people.

Yes, Life is worth it. ANd if you are saved and have excepted Jesus into your life you can live eternally in heaven with him the one show is omnipotent.

If you're doing the same foolish routine day after day, are you truely living?

(This was a discussion brought up in our Sociology class earlier this week).

I mean, if nothing can differentiate day from day - have we lived, or just survived? And what does it mean "to live"?
ocalhoun
^If you're alive, you're living.
That's what it means to live.

If death is defined as the end of life...
Then could you say falling into a routine like you mentioned is death? But there is no return from death, and one can break one's routine.
HoboPelican
YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAW! Of course life is worth it!
Every stage of life has its moments worth living and, once past, worth even more as memories. Sure there are bad times, but bad times end. For me, the bad times become great stories, and the good times get even better due to exaggeration. Laughing

What do you consider to be great?

Yes, children can add more stress to your life, but they can add so much more good things as well. Children can re-teach you how to have fun, how to enjoy the simple things.

You make it sound that no matter what happens, things are all bad, but that's not the case. I may not have accomplished anything some people would call great, but my life is happy. Do I worry about my children? Of course, but all I can do is raise them the best I can and hope they grow to be good, honest men. Do I worry about how to pay for college? Yes, but I don't let it consume me. I believe that things will work out. I know I'll find a way to get them to college, if they want to go.

Do I worry about getting old? NO. It's something that will happen weither I want it to or not. Why worry over it?

You ask if life is worth it, I would have to say yes! Look at it this way, if I didn't have this life, I may miss the bad things, but I would miss the good things as well, and they usually outnumber the bad by a large ratio.
freecitizen
It's worth it when you've found people that make it worth while, and you're making it more worthwhile for people to live.
DeanOlicious
The life outline you presented represents only one way to live your life. Not everyone chooses that path. College is an option, your career is up to you, and you choose to start a family. If any one of those things doesn't satisfy you, then it is your prerogative to change. I guess my opinion is yes, life is worth living, but you have to make it so.

life is a prison house to the believers and paradise for the non believers.

example: there r greedy people in life that only want money, cool things, fame, etc, thats their dream, thats how they wanna be, and they are so attached to life. they never will let go without force. i can see why its hard. but, for a good Muslim, it is a prison house. why? because life is keeping us from getting into Jannah(Allah's paradise). we want paradise more than PS3s, xboxs, PCs, money, fame, presidenship. we want peace, trust, honesty, for THOSE are what is going to taking the true believers to paradise. when u die, u will not take ur $ 1,000,000,000,000,00... with u. if ur in heaven, ur not gonna have ur PS3 beside u, ur gonna have much much better stuff! tho in hell, ur not gonna have that mercedes benz sittin on ur driveway with u. oh no...

I do not think this is the proper question to ask with this life topic if it is then it needs to be followed by

What are you going to do about it?

because just saying this then defining negative reasons why not give me the impression that are looking at some bad information.

anyway life is all about experiences.

we use past experiences to interpret new experiences : so you judge what is happening right now if it is good or bad based on the past.

Now through our experiences we also form beliefs. and these beliefs override open interpretation : so if you believe to earth is square and you believe this with every once in your body you will not see the truth you will actually form a filter that gets rid of any thing that controdices it.
And the only way to get to to see that is to associate it to another experirnce that or filter or interpretation that says you have been wrong before or you trust someones oppinion so much that you can chanh your beliefs

So Is life worth it? I guess it all depend on your beliefs and interpretation

because their are three sides to every story
YOURSIDE
THEIRSIDE
TRUTH

what is different beliefs and interpretations

Yes life is worth it because
I AM BATMAN!!!!!!!

It is up to each person to make life worth it. By having some goals and beliefs and working towards that goal, you get a sense of achievement. And that makes life worth it.

Meeting your life partner and giving that first kiss makes life worth it.

Being part of a union that brings a beautiful person into this world, and that moment that you hold that baby in your arms for the first time makes life worth it.

To see you children look up to you, to see their smiles, that makes life worth it.

When you are 40 years old and your parents are still right there by your side, loving you, caring for you, worrying over you as if you are still their new born babe, makes life worth it.

It is up to each person to make life worth it.
chick.peckin
If life is worth it is up to your attitude. We might consider the following: A barrel has lots of apples in it but most are rotten. Some would say lets do the math and we can see that since rotten is greater than fresh, there is no dispute, these apples are terrible- ie life is not worth it. But another view point is possible- even with one good apple there is value. We can focus only on that apple and enjoy it to its fullest, don't let the rotten apples get us down. Then we have value even when there is only one wonderful experience. And maybe we can make something good out of those rotten apples- compost them!

Well I am glad you agree but I was also talking about interpretation and how as a society and friends and family it is our duty to check to see if they have the right interpretation of each expirience.
Above you say sense of achievement because that is what you believe through your beleif you will interperete the world and your expiriences based.

Now lets say out of theory a child set a goal to win that class award and wins then goes home and sees his mom crying and then to cheer her up they show her the award and then the mother says not right now I am busy What happens then.

say The mother goes to her child later and wants to see and express the joy of their accomplinshment.

Her you could say the child would what to tell mom about award when she is crying

say the child asks again and the mother is drunk and hits the child.
lets not even talk about bad parenting but what type beliefs are they taking from that situation which those belief from that situation now changed the way they interpret the world.

Sometimes I ask myself the same thing. Is life really worth it?

This usually happens when I am in an extremely long queue. The bad things in life like war, disease, etc, in my opinion will make you stronger if you survive it so in that sense, life is worth it.

When however I read that in someone's lifetime that average person will have to wait for your bus about 3 years, queue for 7 years, etc, makes me really question whether life should be about more. I mean, we are supposed to be the most intelligent beings on earth, yet spend most of it not using it properly.

*the figures about are not accurate, but you should get what i mean. I'll try and find some real examples.
missdixy
of course it's worth it, but it doesn't seem like it when you look at it in simply a time line of cares/no cares etc.

i guess it depends on the person. it's worth it for me because my timeline is in moments and feelings.

all the creatures in universe service to life.

Yes, it is worth it, it is all we have and it is (mostly) you who determines what you will do with it. Some would maybe feel better if they died in their current state but that don't mean that they can't make it worth to live.

So, yes it IS worth to live but it is up to YOU to make your own life.

I would just like to sa that people, not life, are full of theft, muder, disease, war and hatred...also, the short, miserable scenario you paint of life is just the narrow vision of a culture we're brought up in. Maybe you should just drop it, deny it, and see what happens. That's right, all the so called values, morals,...god, nationalism, religion, everything you've been told, drop it all and for once in your life look around for yourself. Put everything on hold in your brain and just look with new, fresh eyes...

only a suggestion...kind regards...

A harder life than yours have been lived by countless people before you, and of that you can be sure. We all can't be well known, we all can't be super rich or powerful, hell it seems like we all can't even get the basic necessities. The only thing we can do is try and make the best of what we have and the time we have.

Even if I die old, poor, unknown, it's still better than just wasting my life by committing suicide, I might still have something to show for it. Maybe I helped a few of my neighbors out and made the world an ever so slightly better place. If I had kids, I have something to pass on to them, even if it's just the wisedom gained by living that life. What does suicide get you? Nothing. Your life just ends, no good, no bad, no anything. If there is an afterlife(in the christian sense), well, you just bought yourself an enternity of torment.

If this isn't hypothetical, take it from someone who's felt the helplessness and sorrow of depression, it will get better if you keep going.

Everyone dies, it's a fact of life, no need to rush to the grave.

I know Life is so complicated. Life could be mis understandable, unpredictable, difficult, stereotypical. But I know for sure that we are here on earth just for a TRAINING & LEARNING. The real world is after our life here on earth. All we have to do is to play our own game and doing it by following some set of rules set by our Almighty God.
Lviter
In the past, I thought of comitting suicide, many times. I had a severe depression. This is a disease, you should look for help, if you feel like that.

Life is a precious gift. Realize this and you will feel happniness in simple things you do every day.

I'm not trying to be a downer, but I have always felt that our existence here is pointless, unless we can control our own destiny. To a degree, we can, but my big problem is people are constantly doing the same thing day in and day out, and to me that doesn't have a point. I'm not a big fan of repetitious actions. I hate doing the same thing over and over again (with the exception of sex, but even that drives me crazy sometimes). It's the same when it comes to my business, I do web development, and when I see the same thing on a page over and over again, it drives me crazy. I can't tell you how many times I have changed the layout of my site. However, that's not the point of this poll. Life to me isn't worth it if you can't get out of the same repetitious rut. In order to "live" you have to be able to be free to change your destiny, and control your life.

Is life worth it?

What do you mean? Is life worth what?

Is it worth what you paid for it? I don't know about you, but I got life for free, so I take what I can get.

I'm not going to ask for a refund, that's for sure.

Yes of course it's worth it, actually, it's all we got...

LIFE IS GREAT
have you ever dreamed of being a ghost?
a ghost that is allways there watching people living?
i had that very realistic dream once when i was a small foolish kid.
i felt help less as if what ever happens i couldnt do anything to change it
in my dream as a ghost i saw ppl taking decisions in their life for their future
though then i looked on myself as a ghost i couldnt do nothing i could just stay there watch without the possibility to do anything.
i felt helpless, then.....
i woke up
from that day on i started to understand what it means to live to be able to say 'man i have a life of my own which i can do what ever i want with', its something that we dont realise, its a gift that we dont realise about in our life, we take everything forgranted
we should think how lucky we are that we are alive and are able to think and discuss and talk to others. Gives us freedom and choice and the opoprtunity to make our own future the way we want it to be for us and for the others.
