USB drivers not shown

Hi everyone,
I use a HP Compaq machine with P4 and 1GB of ram at my office. The problem is that the USB controller isn't displayed in the device manager and therefore no USB devices are recognized. What my doubt is that even if the drivers were not installed the device manager should show the USB ports as a problem device.....why isn't this happening? Is there any way tht USB can be turned off in the BIOS settings.
If anyone faced a similar problem please help.

FYI :

I use Win XP Sp2 and the USBUHCI is shown as stopped.

I have a similar problem too. I got the USB hardware drive replaced, but after half a yr, it started giving problems, like not responding to new devices i slotted in like my mp3 player, or popping up, saying usb device not recognised.

From what you two have described it sounds as if the USB Devices are disabled, There's a quick and easy way to enable them again. Just follow these instructions.

As always - back your system up before messing around in the registry.

Just open regedit and browse to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor

Notice the value 'Start'

Switch this value to 3, and USB storage devices are enabled.

To disable them again,

Switch this value to 4, and USB storage devices are disabled.
