How do I install a forum on my frihost website?

solarwind
Hi all, I have a question (I've read the FAQ, but don't understand).

How do I install a forum onto one of my websites?

My website is solarwind.frih.net

How would I install a forum (whatever forum, phpBB or something) into that website? The FAQ says use the cpanel but I don't understand.

Can someone walk me through it please?

You are on Server #2, which uses DirectAdmin instead of cPanel. In order to install software, you need to use the file manager of DirectAdmin to upload it to the server and unpack it (or unpack it first then upload a whole bunch of files, but that usually is not the best way). Be sure to upload it somewhere within your "public_html" directory, or it will be outside the files that your website's visitors can use.

Once it is on the server, just follow the instructions of the software's distributors. Many of them, for example, will include a separate "install" directory so you can go there with your browser and configure things. When they do it that way, they also usually tell you to delete that "install" directory when you are done, so that nobody can hack your site by changing the installation parameters.

Nowadays, especially with software from SourceForge or the like, that is about all you have to do. Of course, it is YOUR responsibility to make sure you already have a database set up, if the software requires it, and that you know its name and its server address, as well as the username and password necessary to use it, but those are all things that DirectAdmin will tell you when you create the database.

Since you are hosted on frih.net and not frihost.net, you don't have cPanel, but DirectAdmin instead as the control panel of your hosting.

In cPanel (and I think it is in DirectAdmin too) there is a Fantastico icon.
Fantastico is some sort of a program to help you easily install things on your website.

In Fantastico, click on phpBB2 under "Discussion Boards" and then it will guide you through a very easy installation of the phpBB forum.

Bummer.
Posted this in the same time as you did, Traveller.
Is there no Fantastico in DirectAdmin?

There is no fantastico in DirectAdmin. Can someone move my account to the other server with the cpanel please?

i don't think that's possible because i guess server #1 is full already. If it isn't i'm sure bondings would have moved people there already. Very Happy

no fantastico in Direct Admin. If this seems hard for you you can go to the market place theres tons of people who offer to install it for free or for a small amount of frih$

Moved to "Website software".

Nope, we won't move people to server 1.

You should follow the instructions which come with the forum software.
