What's your screen resolution? and what do you recommend a website should have?

Is there any code out there to swtich between 800*600 and 1024*768 while maintaining a constant screen for higher screen resolutions?

EDITL I hope this is the right place being a javascript, css and html forum.

Arrow i say webpages should be done for resolutions near 800*600 just in case, and then offer a higher resolution page also for users with 1024*768...

Very Happy are you good in javascript? maybe you could help me with my problem!

Or you could just build a fluid or partially fluid page, rather than having two designs.

Not to advertise my site Rolling Eyes but go to http://www.donutey.frihost.net and play around with the browser size.

IE 7 now respects min-width in CSS so it's easier to build a fluid site (down to a limit, my site's min width is ~500px;)

I agree 100% with you, like I believe a fluid design of a website is the best way to go. I have 2 websites and they're both so fluid that even 800 x 600 screens should be able to view them propperly without having to scroll horizontally (i think this is the case with both of my sites in my signature but i'd be greatful if someone could check). Im also going to be considering on trying to get an easy to implement system where the users can adjust the sizes of the fonts (i think i might need to do this with php).

wow thats is really nice! i've never done a fluid or partially fluid page, but they look really nice! is there something i need to know about how to do them? Very Happy

My resolution is 1600 x 1200 but I do my sites for a 1024 x 768 resolution, sometimes 800 x 600.

My resolution is 1280x1024.
As for designing , it depends on what i am designing for , if i design a company's presentation website , for a broad target audinece i tend to test my design most in 800x600 , thou now-days i think 1024x768 is a safe bet aswell.

If i design for a narrow audience like an intranet application for a company , i test most in 1024x768.

The safest way to design is using a liquid or elastic layout based on css rules and div tags, since cell phones , handhelds and PDAs are gaining more and more imporantce on the net.

My screen resolution is 3200x1200 and I design for 800x600. You should always design a page so everyone out there can view it. I like to anchor my page in the center or to the left if not doing an elastic design.

I've got a 1280 x 1024 screen, and yes, I design for minimum 800 x 600 screen. Better to be too small than it is to be too big.

Exactly. I always design for 800x600. Just to be safe. And honestly, unless its fluid, theres no real point to make a layout that large by default. I'm running 1440x900 and an 800x600-built layout looks just fine in my browser.

is there a possibility to limit the website lauout so that it doesn't extend 1024*768???

anyone?
chris20
i think designing for 800x600 is best, and in my opinion a site that takes up less space at higher resolution's, like an 800x600 site would, looks better

fluid design is nice as well, just that is more difficult than making a static 800x600, and yes ie7 supports min-width in css, but ie7 is ****, and not everyone has upgraded from older versions

1024 x 768,

i design with 800 x 600 in mind, but optimise for 1024 x 768.

Good thing you asked aningbo, recently i've dicovered these attributes in css "max-width" "min-width" (the same thing goes with height). A while back i received a complaint that my website was too wide, apparently he had a high resollution and my fluid design wasn't leaving an white space within his browser no matter how much he stretched it (although some might think this as a good thing). Since then, i've tested the "min-width" code on one of my newer website and it work pretty well, i suggest anyone who's planing on doing a fluid design website to do their research on these css attributes before going ahead and coding all of your websites...
